Fijne Sinterklaas everybody! Did you know it's the birthday of Sinterklaas today and all the Dutchies will be celebrating pakjesavond tonight? It's kind of the Dutch Christmas, even though we'll also celebrate Christmas in a few weeks! More presents, more fun ;)  Surely you'll have seen Sinterklaas and his companion Zwarte Piet in de streets of Amsterdam the last weeks.

Dutch Movie Night
Date: 08-12-2016
Time: 20.00-22.30
Price: Free!
Location: CREA Theatre

In the FREE Dutch Movie Night ISN gives you an insight in the Dutch film culture. We show you movies that were made in The Netherlands, and that most of the Dutchies will know for sure.
No worries… the movie will be shown with English subtitles, so you can actually understand what is being said. ;)

The last movie of this semester we are going to show you is Oorlogwinter (Winter in Wartime). The movie is based on the eponymous 1972 novel of Jan Terlouw. The movie is about a teenaged Dutch boy, named Michiel van Beusekom, who tries to assist the Dutch resistance during World War II by helping a British airman stay out of German hands during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Wartime's harsh reality encroaches on childhood innocence as Michiel confronts good and evil, courage and duplicity, and his own burden of responsibility.

This week’s guest speaker will be Peter Romijn. He is head of the Research department of the Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD) and he is a History professor at the UvA. He will give us a deeper insight into the crisis of the last winter of the war.

The event is free for ISN Amsterdam members and for students at the HvA and UvA. You can just come in and show your ESN/student card, so bring all your friends for a fun night out. NO reservation is needed, hope to see you there! :)

A short survey about our International Student Guide Amsterdam

It's been a while since the summer intro week and most of you are probably preparing for the final exams and enjoying the very last weeks in Amsterdam. We hope your stay in Amsterdam has been as amazing as we promised it'd be during the summer introduction. Although most of you are headed back home after your six-month exchange in Amsterdam, we're prepping for the ISN Wintro. For this reason we'd like to ask you to fill in a short survey about our International Student Guide Amsterdam (ISGA). Was it helpful?

It'll just take a few minutes and you'd greatly contribute to the prepping of the 2017 Wintro!

Thanks in advance(:

The Dutch ABC
Time for the last part!
All good things come to an end, and so does the ISN Dutch ABC :(
We hope it helped you learn a little bit more about Dutch culture!

XXX! You might presume that the triple X represents the erotic scene of Amsterdam. Well, it could. But if you ask a Dutchie what xxx means they'll probably say Drie kusjes; these 3 X's are the Dutch equivalent of the American xoxo. But the XXX that are to be found all across Amsterdam don't mean 3 kisses; they are Saint Andrew's Crosses and are part of the city's crest- not that sexy, but of historic value.

Yiddish. Many words of the Amsterdam dialect originate from the Yiddish language. Examples are mazzel (luck), mesjogge (crazy) and achenebbisj (poor). Before WWII, Amsterdam was home to a large Jewish population whose mother tongue was Yiddish.

Zwarte Piet. As mentioned before, Zwarte Piet is the companion of Sinterklaas. Most foreigners are shocked by their appearance and in the Netherlands the Zwarte Pieten are subject to much debate. To some it is unacceptable and racist that they have blackened faces and are the helpers of Sinterklaas, others say they're only black because of all the chimneys they climb through.

Free Sim Cards for exchange students!

All international students in Amsterdam know Coco’s, the centrally located bar where the ISN Borrels take place. On Wednesday nights, you get discounts on almost every type of beverage, with special deals popping up each week and many exciting theme nights such as Full Moon and Oktoberfest parties.
