Free education, self-discipline
not included.

Our higher education system is, in a word, broken. Tuition rates soar while many have chosen to return to school to ride out the economic storm and hopefully come out of it with better opportunities. However, statistics published recently show that the amount of outstanding student debt is greater than the total amount of credit card debt in the U.S.
On the bright side, there are a growing number of online sites that want you to learn for free, and all you need is the discipline to sit in front of your computer or tablet and do it.
Granted, you may not be conferred an official diploma, but some sites are beginning to offer certificates of completion for a small fee. Or you could forget about the recognition and just satiate your curiosity for the unknown. After all, "education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire" (Plutarch).
