JPride Baltimore is pleased to highlight a message of inclusion from one of our local clergy. This message is brought to us by Rabbi Debbie (Debi) Wechsler of Chizuk Amuno Congregation, Pikesville, MD
A Tale of Two Jews
Last June I was proud to be a part of a milestone occasion in my congregation’s (Chizuk Amuno) 147-year history. I officiated at the first same-sex wedding at Chizuk Amuno Congregation and the first officiated at by Chizuk Amuno clergy. In almost all ways it was a typical wedding: two Jews met, came to love one another, desired to create a Jewish home together and wanted to celebrate their love with blessings offered in the presence of the community. As a Conservative-ordained rabbi, the landmark decision of the Committee on Jewish Law Standards that provided an authentic liturgy for same-sex weddings and the State of Maryland’s legal decision to permit same-sex marriage means we are able to joyfully celebrate with all Jewish couples.
It brings me great joy to know that the young people who grow up in our congregation are able to bring their beloved life partners into our Chizuk Amuno family and to stand with them under the huppah. They want to build a bayitne’eman be yisrael, a faithful home in Israel and we are humbled that they wish to begin that home in their spiritual home.
Let me close with gratitude and say thank you to JPride and to all of its allies and supporters. We are fortunate in the Baltimore Jewish community to have inclusion as one of our foundational values. Thank you for being a part of JPride Baltimore and for allowing me to be a part of it as well.
