Hello, what's up, and welcome to the Lite + Brite newsletter.

Much as I hate to be a Negative Nellie, I'll be honest that 4th of July generally feels like a missed opportunity. There are so many 4oJ events that are like "drink a beer, eat a BBQ, watch some bands, and there you have it: AMERICA!" And, like, I can do those things any day. In researching events for this week's newsletter, I went through the Reddit thread on "things to do in Austin on 4oJ" (they didn't say "4oJ," they said "Fourth of July," but I am establishing a vernacular here), and all the posts were basically like "hiding under the bed with my neurotic dog who hates fireworks." Cool!

It's not a total loss, though. We have a traditional hot dog eating contest and a less traditional pickled egg eating contest. We have opportunities to arm-wrestle roller derby skaters, to admire classic cars, and to watch old Olsen Twins movies at the Museum of Human Achievement—all of which sound like conceptions of America that I can get behind. We have fireworks because duh. And if you're like "no but seriously what is the point of 4oJ and why can't it be Halloween instead," well, we have that, too.

Let's do fun stuff!

Big news regarding No Lights No Lycra, our weekly dance party in the dark: Starting on Monday, July 12th (coincidentally Brian's birthday), and going for at least three Mondays thereafter, we will return to in-person dancing! We'll be in the beautiful, spacious Great Hall at the West China Tea House. RSVP on Facebook here, and/or buy advance tix here! And if you're a NLNLATX fan who's not local (read: Leila's mom), you can still stream our sets live on Twitch. In the meantime, we're taking next Monday off while we prepare for our big IRL return.

Meanwhile, Brian's weekly radio show on the internet's most pee-adjacent radio station, KPISS, continues apace. No Humans Allowed devoted last week's show to robotic Chippendales dancers, aka Microchippendales. You can stream it on KPISS here.

What is No Humans Allowed?
Brian Blackout's weekly robots-themed radio show on internet station Machine vibes 4 machines. Songs for robots, androids, mandroids, cyborgs, AIs, cylons, skinjobs, roombas, wifi routers, smart devices, anything colored Bondi blue, and virtual assistants. Humans not required. Broadcasts live every Wednesday at 10pm on, with over 50 episodes now streamable in the archives on topics like and Beach Simulations, Roomba dance parties, concrete jungles + Cyber Texas.
How do we choose which events to feature?
Honestly, it's pretty random. We might include anything in Austin that we, personally, would conceivably want to go to, generally excluding normal concerts, comedy shows, and movie showtimes because there are many other good resources for finding those. (We especially recommend Showlist for live music, dance.atx for DJs, and 101+ Weird Austin Things to Do for exactly what it sounds like). This list is by no means exhaustive; it's just stuff that caught our eye this week. If you have an event that you want us to consider including, send it over.

Who are we?
We make this newsletter. We put on No Lights No Lycra each week. We do some other stuff here and there. We love going out to creative events in Austin, and we want you to join us. Visit us at
