#dtsjholidays - Light the Holiday Nights
Let's end 2020 with happy spirits and bright lights. We're celebrating the holidays differently this year with our new Light the Holiday Nights public space activation. As you stroll through downtown after shopping or picking up takeout, walk through Plaza de Cesar Chavez for this passive, festive light experience. Surround yourself with the colorful trees, twinkling lights, glowing arches and holiday joy. We hope these colorful lights brighten your spirits and bring a smile to your face. 2020 was a heavy year. Slow down and take a moment to feel light, love and holiday cheer.
Right down the street from Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park is St. Joseph’s Cathedral. While you're downtown, drive by to see the nightly video projections and festive illuminations give the cathedral a different look.

To bring more light and color to downtown, a number of other buildings will be illuminated this week creating a path of lights along First Street from the SoFA District to the Historic District.
Some buildings to look out for:
  • 300 S. First Street - First and San Carlos
  • The Fairmont Hotel Annex along First Street
  • The Pavilion - 150 S. First Street
  • 50 W. San Fernando - First and San Fernando
  • Security and Leticia Buildings at 70 S. First Street
  • Bamboo Panda Mural - First and San Fernando
Also, the City Hall Rotunda and Tower at 200 E. Santa Clara Street will be lit in a variety of colors this month to acknowledge the various cultural holidays such as Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and Diá de Los Reyes.
It's still the most wonderful time of the year! Our gift to you this holiday season is our Downtown for the Holidays weekly giveaway. We picked our first winner last week. You still have a chance to win a taste of downtown, a staycation or an art adventure. Good luck! Enter here

Downtown San Jose Farmers' Market & Holiday Market - Final Week
Drop by the Farmers' Market and Holiday Market one last time Friday from 10 am to 2 pm before it closes for the season. The Market booths will be dressed up with festive holiday decorations and you can judge which booth wins best makeover! Shop fresh produce, hot food and artisan goods. We appreciate our local farmers and artisans coming out each week from the start of June, despite the temporary poor air quality, constantly changing regulations and uncertain attendance.  Thanks also to you for supporting your favorite farmers and booths.
Tackle last minute gift shopping at our Holiday Market. Select from beautiful, handcrafted, artistic pieces that your friends and family will love. While you're there, browse the Moment shops for even more unique, handmade gifts and treasures.

If you want more retail options and to support small businesses, check out our shop local list of open retail in downtown.  Our small businesses are what make our community special, so let's make sure they are here to stay.

San Jose Love Stories - Thank You Groundwerx
San Jose Love Stories highlight acts of kindness by our community for our community. This week, we dedicate our Love Story to Groundwerx. The Groundwerx Crew is responsible for cleaning up and beautifying downtown San Jose. They're the ones who are always out and about downtown in bright orange and green shirts.

Throughout this pandemic and on top of their regular duties, Groundwerx has done so much behind-the-scenes work to keep downtown safe, clean and sanitized for the community. During the holidays, the Groundwerx crews will be out in force, picking up trash, scraping gum, sanitizing handrails, watering planters, removing graffiti, serving the community and making you and I feel safe when we're ordering takeout, visiting the holiday lights and shopping at the Farmers' Market.

From the start of the pandemic in March, Groundwerx has
  • Pressure-washed for 5,761 hours
  • Swept for 12,116 hours
  • Removed 4 ounces of gum
  • Abated 12,072 instances of graffiti
  • Removed 373,400 pounds of trash and debris
This work isn't easy and we are so thankful and grateful that we have Groundwerx to take care of our downtown. Download the Groundwerx Everywhere app for  iPhones or Android to report graffiti and things that need to be cleaned within the district. For service during the holidays, call (408) 287-1520.  To learn more about Groundwerx and the services they provide, visit here.
