FLEURIEU PENINSULA TOURISM
COVID-19 — A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
1 April 2020
A message from the Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Board
These are such tough times for so many in our industry and I wanted to send you the best wishes of the board of Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism.
Our 12 board members include seven operators and I can tell you that all of us are tracking along the same challenging journey as everyone else. If you are facing challenges then I can assure you that so are we.
At the same time all of us are on the same journey through the pain to looking to the future and ways to adapt. Hopefully recent decisions by Federal and State governments to deliver measures which will practically assist us will improve our chances of getting through this.
Our other five members represent the four councils and the RDA and they in different ways are all working hard to get support in behind everyone in their local economies – of which our sector is a particularly important part.
At the end of this time of crisis we want to see our region’s tourism sector come out strong and refreshed, with new ideas balancing all the good things we’ve been doing so far.
Our board represents your region to government and the SATC. And in that context the Premier called me not long after he took up the Tourism portfolio. I was impressed that he came to visit me and we spent over an hour and a half as we discussed the need of our region and regional tourism generally. One outcome of this was intended to be the networking forum on Monday this week. Sadly that had to be postponed. But we will keep in touch with the Premier – who has been very keen to seek the advice of the chairs of the 11 tourism regions – and organise another event when things settle.
The board has asked Peter Cahalan as our manager and Lara Simpson, our social media coordinator, to focus particularly on communicating with our industry. They’ve set up four Facebook groups and I’m delighted that over 100 people have joined them within the first week. If you haven’t joined one then check Peter’s weekly update, coming up tomorrow. The updates have been very well received.
Once again best wishes to you in this tough, challenging, interesting and hopefully creative time.
