FRIENDS OF SOUTH SURREY PARK

MARCH 2021 NEWSLETTER

Sunday Working Bee -28th March 10.00 - 12 noon
Our first working bee for 2021 will be weeding in the part of the park down from Anderson Street.   There will be a change in meeting place for 2021 and each Sunday we will gather at the back of the Scout Hall at 10.00 a.m. where our tools are stored.   Then we can walk to our work area taking tools and wheelbarrows together.
After we have removed the many weeds growing so well in our park we will return to the Scout Hall for our morning tea and chat. We will provide hot water, tea, coffee, and biscuits but please feel free to  bring your own mug.
Contact person is Pam - 0418 176 390

Sunday Working Bee Report - 29th November.

We managed to do some weeding in the Delta street area despite the damp weather then finished the year with a picnic.   It was quite a change from our previous end of year functions but good to finish a difficult year together.

Tuesday Toilers
Tuesday Toilers are our most active group with up to nine members attending for two hours from 10.00 - 12 noon, meeting at our storage place behind the Scout Hall each Tuesday.   Pam has been busy setting up websites so that volunteers can find us and we have been happy to see several new volunteers.   Stefan, Colin and Yung are coming regularly and also Jacqui, who has recently joined us.   Everyone is so welcome; we love to have new faces to join with our long term friends.
There has been much mulch spreading over the weeks as Adrian is coming regularly with a ute load of mulch.   Our aim is to mulch and infill select areas of the park - islands of planting in effect.

Here are the Tuesday Toilers mulching the area beside the creek near Union Road which was badly affected by the mountain bike tracks made during Covid lockdown. It was also necessary to rearrange some branches.

General News
  • We have set our AGM date for this year.   It will be at 7.30 in the Cottage, Surrey Hills Neighbourhood House, on Wednesday, 6th October.
  • We have been contacted by Amy Shaw, Senior Sustainability Officer at Boroondara Council with offers of tools and bird and bat monitors.  The Song Meter will record our bird song and then the data will be analysed through the software Kaleidoscope.
  • Maggie will be taking a group from Through Road Kindergarten around the park once every two weeks.   She has lots of ideas of things to show little people.
  • Adrian found some Serrated Tussock in our park; a worrying invasive weed. There is more information if you click here.
  • Pam and I represented our group at the Boroondara Volunteer Expo on Wednesday, 17th March.   We were pleased with the interest shown as numbers were down due to Covid restrictions. We hope to see some of these interested people in our park soon.
  • Next Committee Meeting 16th June at 7.30.

In the Park this month - Common Grass Butterfly or Zizina labradus

You can see this tiny butterfly flitting about on the grassy areas of the park.  It is small and quick so this photo is from the Net.
This butterfly is a pale purple-blue colour with wing edges dull brown.  Below it is grey with brown and white markings.   The wingspan is up to 3 cm.
It is found in western and eastern mainland Australia and in Tasmania, where it tends to live in urban areas and grasslands.   It flies close to the ground, landing frequently to feed on nectar in  flowers.   The caterpillars feed on low-growing native and introduced legumes.   They are green and well camouflaged amongst their food plants.    Small black ants sometimes tend the developing caterpillars and cocoons.
