A newsletter now?

I find it incredibly difficult to write this newsletter about my latest accomplishments - because most days I just find myself thinking “What the f*ck is going on in this world??” Like, when did we all start hating each other? Or at the very least, when did we become so incredibly apathetic to the plight of those who are not like us? And I then go down the path of thinking, “It is so wrong for me to focus on my selfish aspirations when I should be on the front lines fighting for equality.”
So, I have to remind myself that the type of work I am trying to put out into the world is an attempt to do just that. I am not a lawyer, or a social worker, or a politician. I am an artist. And this is the contribution I can make. So, in that spirit, here are a few of the things that I’ve been working on…

Writing

I’ve been submitting my comedy pilot “Can’t Help Myself” to various writing competitions. I decided to release it into the world, so you can read it if you’d like to see a sample of my work. I know a public release is generally frowned upon, but I am very done with playing it safe. Lemme know if you are a television producer who wants to buy this show, because that would be pretty cool.

As enticement, some feedback from a Black List reader: “CAN’T HELP MYSELF is a strong workplace comedy lampooning the therapy world. Network friendly and featuring a diverse cast of misfits and outcasts, the most impressive aspect of the pilot is how strong the comedic voice of the screenwriter comes through. It’s filled with an adult-skewing oddball tone that would sit perfectly alongside BIG BANG THEORY or TWO BROKE GIRLS, complete with pop culture gags and memorable zingers.

I’m also in the middle of revising my second feature screenplay, starting to write my first spec script (of my fave Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and experimenting with a new media venture. I also finished my third pilot titled “Treason Club” (This one was mostly my comedic reaction to the tragic world around us, not for public consumption at the moment - also, I don't want to get arrested).

Directing/Producing
My short film (made with my boyfriend Tyler and his brother for $70 bucks), Scare Me, won an Honorable Mention as part of the YOMYOMF/NBCUniversal Interpretations contest!! Thank you to the many of you who watched it and voted!!

I also recently completed a family/zombie short film (yes, it’s both genres) that was made to partake in the HBO Visionaries contest. We didn’t win, but now we are in the process of submitting to other festivals, and I think it came out GREAT. But then again, I wrote it, directed it, and starred in it. Biased much, you think?

And finally, I was hired to direct and produce a political short film called The First Lady, written by the amazing Amir Talai (who also stars) and Nina Manni. We had heavy hitter actors Eve Gordon and Jennette McCurdy in it as well. We're currently in post-production, but I can unbiasedly say that the script is AWESOME and the performances are PHENOMENAL.

My goal is to produce a horror feature film in the next year or two. Tell me if you have a good script or idea (or money)! My best horror ideas all focus on what happens when the ACA is repealed, and something tells me I haven’t quite hit on something marketable yet.

My Fake Family

Acting

I shot a funny Guest Star on NCIS:LA. Yes, I met Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J (who goes by the name Todd, just fyi - who knew?). It was one of the most warm and awesome sets I’ve been on. Very grateful.

I also did another episode of General Hospital. This time, instead of murder, there was an accidental poisoning of a child — or was it accidental?? Don’t worry, the kid made it!! You can see highlights from these spots on my updated reels.

Do you know who John Cusack is? Welp, I did a movie with him. And, by that, I mean the scene I was supposed to have with him was cut sometime between the audition and the shoot. But I was still in it. And he was still in it. So, I feel like we have something special. Details when the movie is released...

I joined a group of actors who meet weekly and whose sole goal is to book a pilot this season. And guess what, one of us did!!! I mean, it wasn’t me. But it’s still pretty cool. Alan Ball’s new show!! So, what I’m saying is, I’m still available to be hired thank you very much.

I started a new acting class. I am on a mission to be a better actor. Too much business and not enough art doesn’t do anyone any good. Particularly me.

A Personal Note...

Well, if you’ve read this far, you are a trooper. And we need troopers like you!! I started a political advocacy group called Operation Checks and Balances. We write letters, make group donations, and support (or chastise!) our representatives. We are local to LA and meet once a month, so let me know if you’d like to participate in any of these activities.

And just so you don’t think I’m all work and no play - I’m getting ready to go to Singapore, Bali, and Vietnam this summer!!! Open to hear your suggestions and warnings! I know, I know, don’t chew gum in Singapore. (But I have to - my mom makes me import cases of gum for her!)

Sending you love and good wishes for your own aspirations,

Elaine
