Hedge Laying Competition

Eighteen hardy competitors contended with strong winds, spells of sunshine and snow showers at our Annual Hedge Laying Competition.

The event, held at New Hall Farm, Staveley was part of the Lancashire & Westmorland Hedge Laying Association Grand Prix series bringing together novices, juniors and professionals to show off their skills and lay 115m of hedge between them.

Landscape Flood Appeal

Storms has caused devastating impacts on Cumbria's beautiful landscapes. You can help us restore these special places. If you would like to give to fixing the landscapes of the Lake District we have set up our own Lake District Landscape Flood Appeal.

Fix the Fells
Needs Your Vote!

Nurture Lakeland, a core partner with us on the Fix the Fells project, has nominated a project to repair footpaths to the summit of The Old Man of Coniston with the European Outdoor Conservation Agency (EOCA). It's been shortlisted for one of their prestigious international awards totalling £28,000.

Put the 8th March in your diary and look out for further news from us via Twitter and Facebook about how to vote.

You don't have long to send us your winter views.

Five winning images will be featured on our 2016 Christmas cards. Winners will receive complimentary copies and given full photography credits on their card. You can see all of the images submitted so far on our website competition page together with entry rules and details.

Words by the Water Festival Lecture
A lecture delivered at this year’s festival by Chief Executive, Douglas Chalmers on the topic of ‘Protecting Cumbria’s Landscapes’.

Sat 23rd April
Black Combe Walk


Walk along the route of the proposed pylon line in the west of the Lake District over Black Combe taking in the stunning views towards the sea and Lake District peaks and talk with people from Friends of the Lake District and local group Power without Pylons about how new pylons will damage this amazing area.

Annual Dry Stone Walling Competition
Watch the wallers in action at Mazonwath, Little Asby. Free entry.

Keswick Mountain Festival Fell Care Day
There’s never been a more urgent need for your help in volunteering at one of our Fell Care Days this year.

Annual General Meeting and members events
Grizebeck Village Hall. Guided tours and walks in the morning. More details to follow.

Glenridding and Patterdale Fell Care Day
There’s never been a more urgent need for your help in volunteering at one of our Fell Care Days this year.

Morecambe Bay Walk
Join us on this unique 8 mile sponsored walk across the tidal sands and mudflats of Morecambe Bay to raise money to protect the stunning Lake District landscape.

Mon 1st August
The Long View Walk: Little Asby Hawthorn - Member event
An opportunity for our members to join photographer and writer, Rob and Harriet Fraser, for insights into trees, ecology and landscape heritage. A 4-hour circular walk across limestone pavements. Moderate. Start 10am Great Asby Church, GR 681132. More details to follow.

Government to apply for EU Flood Funding


25th February 2016

The government finally makes a decision to apply to the EU Solidarity Fund for up to £125m of funding for help for flood damaged areas including Cumbria with only one day left to the 12 week deadline.

The government had been criticised by politicians in Cumbria and the south of Scotland for its slowness in applying for the funding.
