Health in the News: COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. COVID-19 is a new strain of the virus that has not been previously identified in humans until this year.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

To prevent the spread of Coronavirus, it is recommended you:

1.) Practice social distancing by remaining 6 feet away from people.
2.) Work from home and avoid going out to public places unless necessary.
3.) Wash your hands throughout the day. Spend at least 20 seconds scrubbing your hands with soap and water.

4.) If you experience any symptoms, isolate yourself and call your provider.

WMC is working to keep you up to date with information about Coronavirus. WMC staff worked with the Patient Advisory Council to answer some of the most frequently asked questions. Visit, for answers to these questions and more.

Also, the WMC Health Education Webinar Series kicks off Friday, April 10 at 10:00am with COVID-19 Q&A with Dr. Hammond: Hot Topics and Practical Advice. To register, go to:
