“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” -Dalai Lama

June is known as the month of love due to its popularity for weddings. This tradition dates back to ancient Roman times as the month named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, home, and family. The month also celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month.) While today the gatherings are festive, they are deep-rooted in the painful past of these minority groups as they struggled to overcome prejudice and be accepted for who they are. The Stonewall uprising in June 1969 in New York City sparked the modern gay rights movement. However, there is still a call to action that inspires us to live up to our Nation’s promise of equality, liberty, and justice for all.

As Realtors, our industry celebrated earlier this year with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announcement that the Fair Housing Act now covers people who experience discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and prohibits mortgage and lending discrimination for housing. This decision was monumental since the Fair Housing Act passed in 1968 did protect against sexual discrimination; only some cities and states chose to protect against sexual orientation discrimination, so federally, the protection was scarce. For the first time, the LGBT community is now protected from housing discrimination under federal law.

Unfortunately, the colorful parades and lively parties are postponed this year due to Covid, but there are still many ways to observe Pride month in Metro Detroit. Check out our list below for local celebrations.
