The SGS Village
In addition to teachers, staff, mentors, parents, and family, SGS students have the opportunity to work with professional women from the community many times throughout their middle school years. Our 8th graders recently gathered for their first culmination of the year, where they were joined by their project mentors, all professional women in engineering or business who committed to working with a student on her design project for several weeks.
Each student gets individualized attention from a professional while working through the steps innovators must complete: different iterations on an initial idea, prototyping, market research, and putting together a convincing pitch for investors. Then each student presents their products, and both faculty and project mentors inquire about aspects of their business plan and design to determine if it is a good investment. The most commonly overheard phrase heard while walking around the room during their product pitches was “I would buy that.”
One of the great things about the adult presence in this culmination is that it is not a completely unique experience here at SGS. Our 6th graders work with doctors while going through SGS Med School, and we team with lawyers and law clerks every year to prepare our 7th graders for their Mock Trial (which Justice Mary Yu presides over). All of these women are a part of our SGS village, and their presence helps our students see themselves as doctors, lawyers, CEOs, and engineers.
We want to thank all of the women who, over the past 15 years, have joined us on campus—whether for a culmination or to present at a Community Meeting. Our mission promises to inspire courageous leaders, and your involvement in our village does just that.
