The first month of 2021 has started and the Practice has had a gentle flow of clients throughout! We were open during the holiday period and we enjoyed assisting clients throughout this time. We welcomed back our Pilates clients from the first week of January, both in studio and remote sessions.
All of us are looking forward to seeing our clients in the new year. Keep an eye out for specials which we post on our website!
Take a deep breath....
Breathing is a vital function - it is necessary for movement, health, and wellbeing.
Physios are well trained to be able to identify abnormal breathing patterns. It can manifest with shallow breaths, for example, which results in the air concentrating in the upper zones of the lungs, instead of reaching the bottom of the lungs, to aerate them adequately. Breathing in this way is common when stressed or anxious.
Importantly, shallow breathing can reduce our pain threshold quite significantly and can alter our perception of pain. Think about when we have an injury and our bodies feel shocked - the first thing those around you tell you to do is to relax and breathe.
Try this exercise to improve your breathing mechanics: close your eyes and relax your head, neck and shoulders. Place the dorsal surface of your hands either side of the ribcage, over the lateral ribs (see photo). Take five deep, slow breaths - feeling the lateral expansion of the chest and diaphragm under your hands. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.
What have our physios been up to? Our physios have taken some time off during the festive season, spending time with their loved ones and safely exploring different parts of South Africa.
Cathy spent her holiday with her family, reconnecting with nature. They had an active holiday and enjoyed their time cycling and hiking the trails along the coast and playing tennis.
Cloudia walked the Whale Trail in De Hoop Nature Reserve with some of her family and friends. They spent 6 days walking along the coast, enjoying the sun, the sea breeze and the beautiful views. What a wonderful way to spend your holiday!
