Department Sustainability Challenge 2013

Registrations have opened for the 2013 Department Sustainability Challenge (DSC)! The Challenge will commence on Wednesday 17 July and will run until Thursday 12 September. There will be actions over 5 challenge categories this year. For a sneak preview of the 2013 categories click hereA group of Macquarie University internship students are currently being recruited to undertake the role of Challenge Liaisons. They will assist Departments to implement the actions in the Challenge scorecard.
Competing to win titles at the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 15 October (and other prizes along the way as stars are accumulated), getting involved in the Department Sustainability Challenge has never been simple or more fun! We can't believe this is the 5th year that Macquarie has run the DSC. We are proud to say that the DSC has become a sustainability engagement model copied by other organisations around the globe.

Greening Macquarie
Campus Workplace Greening Through M-Power

The second M-power theme, ‘Get Green with Your Team’ has received tremendous interest from Departments across campus. This theme focused on engaging colleagues around the benefits of indoor plants in the workplace. A total of 10 teams across the University used up our grants pool (of up to $250) to decorate their offices with plants of all shapes and sizes! These Departments include:
  • Department International Studies
  • Graduation Unit
  • Department of Education
  • Human Resources
  • Climate Futures (Research Centre within the Department of Biological Sciences)
  • Macquarie University Sport
  • Gumnut Cottage
  • Macquarie Property
  • Learning and Teaching Centre
  • Faculty of Human Sciences - various departments
Many Departments across campus are continuing to spread the word about the power of plants in improving workplace indoor air quality, health and productivity by encouraging staff to either bring in a plant from home or buy one for their desk. Some staff have approached their Manager to allocate some funding towards office plants and have been successful. It is wonderful to see university staff actively greening their areas and reaping the benefits! Check out the photos here, and be sure to enter your teams story and before/after shots before Monday 15 July to enter the competition!

Health Week Warrior Walk

Health Week

From Monday 15th - Friday 19th July all Macquarie staff are invited to take part in Health Week. There are a range of health related offerings for you to get involved in, including health checks and workshops on time management and work/life balance. During the Warriors@Work Health Week there will be a Warrior Walk on Wednesday 17th July at 12.30pm-2.00pm. The Warrior Walk is an opportunity for you to take part in a lunchtime walk around campus ending with a delicious soup lunch in the Atrium.

The aim is to make the Warrior Walk an annual staff engagement event to highlight how easy it is for staff to fit in some exercise into the working day. The target is the involvement of 500 attendees, but we need your help to achieve this. Please spread the word and get as many of your colleagues as possible to take part in this social walk and lunch event. Why not get a little dressed up or doing something else for fun to represent your Department!

The walk will commence in the Central Courtyard. For further information and to RSVP please click here.
