EFP celebrates success of EuroPerio10, the ‘Olympic Games’ of dental congresses

The EFP has hailed EuroPerio10, held in Copenhagen from June 15 to 18, as the “most exciting” edition of the triennial EuroPerio congress so far. More than 7,200 participants from over 100 countries took part in 41 scientific sessions in a main programme with more than 130 leading speakers from all around the world. Higlights included:

  • Three live surgeries.
  • The "world premiere" of the EFP clinical practice guideline on stage IV periodontitis.
  • Clinical video and "nightmare" sessions focused on periodontal and peri-implant surgeries.
  • A tribute to former Journal of Clinical Periodontology editor Maurizio Tonetti.
  • A closing session highlighting the scientific impact of EuroPerio since its first edition in Paris in 1994.


EFP launches clinical-practice guideline on multidisciplinary therapy for stage IV periodontitis   

The EFP’s S3-level clinical practice guideline on the multidisciplinary treatment of stage IV periodontitis was published as an open-access supplement of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology and presented at EuroPerio10.


Paper on adjunctive antibiotics to treat aggressive periodontitis receives Jaccard-EFP research prize

The 2022 Jaccard-EFP Research Prize in Periodontology, awarded at EuroPerio10 in Copenhagen, was given to Raluca Cosgarea and colleagues (University of Bonn, German Society of Periodontology) for a paper on systemic antibiotics to treat patients with periodontitis stage III/IV, grade C.


First EFP prizes for digital innovation are awarded 

The winners of the first EFP Innovation Award for Digital Solutions for Gum Health, financially supported by GSK, were announced at EuroPerio10. 


EFP photo contest winners chosen in Copenhagen

Dental photographers from Israel, Spain, and Turkey won the prizes in the EFP photo contest, organised around EuroPerio10, with winners in three categories: gum health care, dental diseases, and extreme/lifestyle.


Surplus congress backpacks are given to charity

The EuroPerio10 backpacks were a hit in Copenhagen, but at the end of the congress there were a few left over. Organisers donated these surplus bags to organisations in Denmark that help socially vulnerable people.


EFP workshop with family doctors will create evidence-based recommendations

An EFP workshop focused on periodontology and family doctors will take place in Madrid on July 10-11 to draw up a consensus on the latest evidence on associations between periodontitis and systemic diseases and to come up with recommendations for family doctors and dentists.


New podcast with Sanz and Sculean on regeneration 

The second Perio Talks podcast will soon be available, featuring Mariano Sanz (Complutense Univeristy of Madrid) and Anton Sculean (University of Bern) who consider advances made in regeneration in recent years and the biological knowledge and surgical skills needed by clinicians to perform bone regeneration successfully rather than extract and replace teeth. 


Ten-year study shows benefits of M-MIST technique to treat intrabony defects   

A 10-year follow-up of a randomised controlled trial, now summarised as JCP Digest 102, compared the long-term stability of outcomes using the modified minimally invasive surgical (M-MIST) technique alone and in combination with enamel matrix derivative (EMD) and bone-mineral-derived xenograft (BMDX).
