Postgraduate symposium brought together 19 universities to share research and clinical cases

The ninth EFP Postgraduate Symposium took place from September 1 to 3 in Belgium, bringing together students and lecturers from the federation’s 19 accredited programmes in periodontology. The effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on patients with diabetes, the association between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s disease, and the clinical use of hyaluronic acid were among the topics covered at the symposium, which involved 94 students and 40 university teachers.

EFP Virtual Perio Talks podcasts can now be accessed directly from the EFP website, which has a new page dedicated to them. In the latest podcast, Iain Chapple discussed the financial and human cost of gum disease. The next podcast, due to be released later in September, features Filippo Graziani and Reena Wadia discussing branding and social media for dental professionals.

WHO Foundation's Ukraine campaign, backed by EFP, raises over €8.3m for urgent healthcare

The EFP-supported campaign to provide life-saving healthcare and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine has so far raised almost €8.3 million, which has enabled emergency treatment, prevented the spread of disease, and delivered medical supplies and equipment. But more help is needed. "I would once more strongly urge our colleagues to donate via the EFP-WHO Foundation campaign,” said EFP president Andreas Stavropoulos.

Latest JCP Digest explores pros and cons of
socket sealing in ridge preservation
 

There has been a lack of information about the pros and cons of different bone-regeneration techniques to counteract the atrophying of the alveolar bone after tooth extraction. A systematic review of clinical trials assessing different techniques – now summarised as JCP Digest 103 – compared techniques for alveolar-ridge preservation that involve primary closure (coronally advanced flap, free gingival grafts, and connective-tissue grafts) with other techniques.

University of Florence joins EFP-accredited postgraduate programmes

The periodontology department of the University of Florence in Italy has become the latest institution to gain approval to teach the EFP-accredited postgraduate programme in periodontology. There are now 19 EFP-accredited universities in 12 countries.
