Graziani and Shapira discussed impact of research showing association between periodontitis and Covid-19 complications
“A VERY important paper” with “very striking data” and implications for the healthcare of people with Covid-19 and key messages on prevention for the public and medical professionals.
These were among the comments from Filippo Graziani (University of Pisa and EFP past president) and Lior Shapira (Hebrew University–Hadassah of Jerusalem and EFP president-elect) in an Instagram Live session on the EFP’s Instagram page (@perioeurope) on Wednesday 3 February about new research showing an association between periodontitis and Covid-19 complications.
The case-control study, published by the EFP’s Journal of Clinical Periodontology (JCP) on February 1, found that Covid-19 patients with periodontitis were 3.5 times more likely to be admitted to intensive care, 4.5 times more likely to need a ventilator, and almost nine times more likely to die compared to those without periodontitis.
Professors Graziani and Shapira outlined the possible biological explanations for this association:
- The combination of inflammation from Covid-19 (via "cytokine storms") and inflammation from the periodontitis may be synergistic and cause damage to the patient.
- Bacteria in periodontal pockets may go down into the lungs where Covid-19 is causing pulmonary infection and create a "superinfection" of the virus and the periodontal pathogens
The two experts also stressed the importance of prevention messages for the public and medical professionals based on the research.

EFP Perio Sessions webinar on Guideline Step 1: Iain Chapple on building a 'stairway of care'

IN A well-attended live EFP Perio Sessions webinar on January 28, Iain Chapple gave a clear presentation on Step 1 of the EFP’s S3-level clinical practice guideline for the treatment of stage I-III periodontitis, focusing on behavioural change, risk factors and their management, and professional mechanical plaque removal (PMPR).
Prof Chapple, professor of periodontology at the University of Birmingham in the UK and former secretary general of the EFP, emphasised that Step 1 “gives us our biggest improvement in oral healthcare gain and in periodontal healthcare gain” and that “everything else performed in periodontal therapy depends upon it.”
The webinar concluded with a lively Q&A session, moderated by Spyros Vassilopoulos, which covered topics including patient motivation, advice on diet and exercise, air-polishing, flossing, and online risk-assessment tools.

JCP Digest explores titanium curettes versus chistosan brushes for supportive therapy after
peri-implantitis surgery
SURGICAL therapy has been shown to have a beneficial short-term effect on the progression of peri-implant disease. Post-surgery, supportive peri-implant therapy is important and different techniques have been deployed. Research summarised as JCP Digest, number 82, assessed the use of chitosan brushes (test) and titanium curettes (control) as treatment methods in supportive peri-implant therapy, from six months to 18 months after surgical therapy.
