IMPACT OF PERIODONTITIS: The EFP-comissioned report Time to take gum disease seriously: The societal and economic impact of periodontitis, published by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), will be presented by report author Chrissy Bishop and contributor Iain Chapple, former EFP secretary general, in a free webinar on Tuesday 14 September at 17:00 (CET). This EIU report is a comprehensive analysis on the financial and human cost of gum disease in six Western European countries. It shows how the most cost-effective strategy is one based on eliminating gingivitis. The EFP has published country-focus articles on the report's recommendations for France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

JCP DIGEST: The presence of a prosthesis may lead to the underestimation of periodontal probing depth (PPD), according to cross-sectional study, summarised as JCP Digest 88. The University of Barcelona study also found that the underestimation may be more pronounced in healthy implants compared to implants with mucositis.

PERIO & CARDIO: A new study, recently presented at a leading cardiology congress, shows that there is a graded increase in risk of new cardiovascular events in patients with periodontal disease. The research, performed in Sweden, found that this association was particularly evident among patients who had experienced a heart attack in the past.
AWARDS: The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) has awarded its 2021 Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Periodontal Disease to Bruno Loos, programme director of the EFP-accredited postgraduate master’s programme in periodontology at the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) in the Netherlands.
