EFP celebrates its 30th anniversary

THE EFP is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its foundation – 30 years of promoting periodontal science and clinical practice, 30 years of periodontal health for a better life.
The origins of the EFP date back to the late 1980s, when two periodontists – Dutch academic Ubele van der Velden and French clinician Jean-Louis Giovannoli – realised that the aims and challenges of Europe's national societies of periodontology were similar and that it made sense to join forces.
After a series of preparatory meetings, representatives of 11 national periodontal societies met in Amsterdam on 12-13 December 1991 and agreed the constitution and bylaws of the new European Federation of Periodontology.
The initial EFP was a federation of the national societies of Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Scandinavia, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. Since its foundation, the federation expanded – first within Europe and then globally – and it now comprises 37 national societies from Europe, the Middle East, North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
“We are proud of the outstanding level of collaboration and exchange we've reached between our 37 scientific societies from all around the world, even if every single one of them keeps its autonomy and identity,” said EFP president Lior Shapira. “As the EFP has gone global in the last years, diversity has become one of our strengths. Our native languages are different, but we all speak gum health – this is our common language. Then, production of scientific evidence and a shared vision of periodontal health for a better life are the secrets of our unity.” image of EFP 30th anniversary videoTo commemorate the 30th anniversary, the EFP has produced a series of three commemorative videos which are available on the EFP's YouTube channel. It is also preparing a booklet about the history of a federation.  The first video, Foundation and evolution of the EFP, traces the growth of the federation from that foundational meeting to its present status as a “global influencer”. The second video, EuroPerio as the global perio meeting point, focuses on the EFP’s triennial congress, the first of which took place in Paris in 1994. And the third video, Thirty years of projects at the service of gum health, describes the EFP’s scientific and educational campaigns and publications.
EFP secretary general Nicola West said: "An organisation no matter how good is only as successful as the people who live and work in it – congratulations on 30 wonderful EFP years!"

LOOKING BACK TO FIRST EUROPERIO
Marking the EFP's 30th anniversary, the chair of the first EuroPerio (Paris, 1994) and two other members of its organising committee look back on the success of a pioneering meeting. Jean-Louis Giovannoli, Pierre Baehni, and Edwin Winkel give their reflections on "a major event for European periodontology, which opened up new perspectives and opportunities."
VIDEO ON EUROPERIO HISTORY
One of the three commemorative videos published by the EFP on its 30th anniversary focuses on EuroPerio. EuroPerio as the global perio meeting point looks at the EFP’s triennial congress which “brings together the very best expertise from the world of periodontology and to share vision, evidence, and resources”. Jean-Louis Giovannoli describes the first EuroPerio at EuroDisney in Paris in 1994 and how it set the scene for the future editions of the congress. Francis Hughes, who chaired EuroPerio8 and is the current chair of the EFP’s congress committee, describes how “the congress became more and more successful after the leap in quality we saw in EuroPerio7 (Vienna, 2012)” and how EuroPerio8 (London, 2015), the first congress to attract more than 10,000 attendees, “set a gold standard for the future.” The EuroPerio story continues with Michèle Reners describing the new formats, new technologies, and new angles introduced at EuroPerio9 (Amsterdam 2018), which she chaired.

TIMING OF ORTHODONTICS IN PATIENTS WITH STAGE IV PERIODONTITIS

The latest issue of JCP Digest, the EFP's research summary, focuses on the timing of orthodontic therapy in patients with stage IV periodontitis who have received regenerative surgery.  A clinical trial, summarised as JCP Digest 94, compared outcomes in patients who received orthodontic treatment four weeks and six months after regenerative surgery to treat an infrabony defect. The study found statistically significant improvements in clinical attachment levels (CAL) and probing pocket depth (PPD) in both groups, with better outcomes in the early-treatment group (although the difference was not statistically significant)
