Introduction

Hello SW Optimist sailors and parents. My name is Andrew Utting and I have just taken over from Tony Martin as the IOCA Southwest rep.

First off, I would like to thank Tony for the great job that he has done in the SW for the last couple of years. We have enjoyed some fantastic open training around the region, SW championships and Zone indicator events, all of which wouldn’t have happened without Tony’s organization and contribution of his time.

So now it sinks in exactly what I have to do! First off I will be co-ordinating three open winter training sessions (possibly 4) – more details to follow.

Additionally, I would like to establish a Southwest Travellers Series of open events throughout the season, possibly tied with a days training. Please contact me if your club can host an event so that we can co-ordinate dates.

Also planned for 2017 is a girls Optimist camp. IOCA and the RYA are very keen to encourage girls sailing as there are far fewer girls than boys participating at present. IOCA have run these camps in other regions this year with great success. A boy’s only camp is also a possibility if anyone would like to volunteer to organise it.

If there are any events that you feel should/could be run in the SW please either contact me by email or have a chat with me – I will be at most events. I would value your opinions, and we will see what can be done.

None of these events can happen without the support of parents who assist with organising & liaising with their own club committees, and help with the many activities on the day of the events. Thank you to all who have contributed in the past (and I am sure will continue to do so!) Please do volunteer to help out and make really special events oppy events.

Zone indicator training / Restronguet Open
3rd & 4th September 2016

19 Sailors attended the SW Zone indicator training on Saturday 3rd September and arrived at the club with a forecast of wet and wild conditions for the day. With the breeze due to build into the afternoon the sailors were split into 3 groups coached by Phil Sparks (Head coach – assessing zone applicants), John Burford and Jasmine Waite and launched as quickly as possible. True to the forecast, it was indeed windy and incredibly wet. After a good morning sailing the sailors came ashore buzzing from the experience. After lunch the wind dropped a little and the fleet sailed a number of short races.

On Sunday 21st September one additional sailor arrived for the Restronguet Open Meeting. The breeze had dropped considerably overnight and it was a much brighter day.
Two races were run in the morning with a third after lunch, all in a challenging light breeze and strong tides. Matthew Banbrook (12) of Bowmoor SC scored a clean sheet of firsts for overall victory followed by Rufus Martin (14) of Restronguet SC and Henry Keegan (10) of Parkstone YC in 3rd.
Thanks to all at Restronguet for organising and running a great event and making everyone so welcome – It’s always a fantastic place to sail!
