Reminders of Mortality

There has been some horrible news recently. 50 murdered in New Zealand, 47 killed in a factory explosion in China, hundreds dead in Mozambique.

Some say such horrors prove there is no God of love. But this is nothing new, it all results from the fallen world, the effects of sin. Jesus was confronted with similar events in Israel:

“some … told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.  He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3 …. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem?  No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.” (Lu 13:1-5).

Some deaths seem much worse than others, but Jesus says we cannot avoid it. We must think of what comes after – and therein lies our hope. Our loving God has promised that we can overcome the sin that is everywhere in the world with faith in Jesus, and thus receive everlasting life.
