The dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Why did God choose a dove? The bird has many characteristics, one of which is that it is clean and this speaks of purity. That is why God’s spirit is called the Holy Spirit. Purity is His preeminent characteristic. When Jesus was baptised by his cousin, John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit descended and settled on Him in the form of a dove and God’s voice declared that Jesus was indeed His son in whom He was well pleased.

In Genesis, when the flood waters started to recede, Noah sent out two birds, one a raven and the other a dove. Whereas the raven flew back and forth, the dove returned to the ark twice before finally leaving for good and settling elsewhere.

When the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sinful nature, we are also made aware of the holiness and purity of God so that we might repent and believe in a God who loves us so much. On committing our lives to Christ, the Holy Spirit not only settles upon us like a dove, He also comes and dwells within. We become temples of the Holy Spirit. What is more, He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. As a result, we His children, become clean and pure not through anything we have done but simply through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ

Our part is then to cooperate with what the Holy Spirit is teaching us through God’s Word and allow Him to carry on the process of transforming our lives to become more like Jesus. What an amazing God we have that sent the same Holy Spirit that settled on Jesus, to settle on us and live within us.
