A Friend Indeed

I am fortunate that I have so many friends among the fellowship at St James’. Friends aren’t there to solve your problems, prevent bad things happening, or even heal you when you’re sick. No, they bring comfort, encouragement, the company of fellow travellers on this great journey of life.

Over the years I have often reflected on that great hymn by Joseph Scrivens, “What a Friend we have in Jesus”, written to comfort his sick mother then far away, but inspired by the discovery through the terrible tragedies that had afflicted him that Jesus was indeed his most dependable friend.

Jesus experienced in person just about every challenge that life can provide: temptation, poverty, rejection, injustice, torture, grief pain and death, so truly he can know our situations and our needs. He said:

“Greater love has no-one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” John 15:13

He said we are his friends. We can count on that, and through our prayers affirm the truth that Joseph Scrivens learnt:

Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer
