Wanted: six producers

MLA has announced a program that will challenge six Australian producers to compete over the next 12 months to improve the productivity and profitability of their businesses.
The MLA Challenge will track the progress of six producers as they strive to outperform their current business benchmarks while tackling the vagaries and challenges of everyday farm life.

MLA’s General Manager Livestock Production Innovation Peter Vaughan said applications are now open for the MLA Challenge which will enable two northern cattle producers, two southern cattle producers and two sheepmeat producers to take up the opportunity with their families or partners and push their businesses further.

Analysis Updates

A small number of analysis updates will be made to the MERINOSELECT and LAMBPLAN analysis in May. While these will be relatively minor, some breeders may see these updates influence their data.
  • New ways of creating management groups in the reproduction analysis to capture more information
  • The fertility threshold for using yearling data has been lowered.
  • The fertility threshold for adult data is now based on the number of ewes lambing rather than number of lambs born
  • The MERINOSELECT genetic groups have been updated to use more time periods.

More details on these updates can be accessed by the following link: http://www.sheepgenetics.org.au/Updates/Analysis-changes

These analysis updates have been put in place with advice from the Sheep Genetics Technical Committee and reviewed and endorsed by the Sheep Genetics Advisory Committee

On-Property Consultation Program

Throughout the year the LAMBPLAN and MERINOSELECT Project Officers will be conducting on property visits. These visits will be used to road test a number of new reports aimed at identifying areas to improve your rate of genetic gain, including:
  • Genetic trends
  • Completeness of recording
  • Data quality
  • management group structure

If you are interested in a visit from Tom or Luke, you will need to register your interest by calling 02 6773 2948 or emailling info@sheepgenetics.org.au.

Lifetime Fleece Traits

Currently Sheep Genetics only uses one adult measurement in the MERINOSELECT analysis, but has the capacity to use records on sheep up to 6 years of age. We are looking to use as many records as possible to further understand fleece characteristics over the lifetime of the animal and improve our analysis. If you currently measure fleece and body weights on all your mixed age breeding ewes, please contact Luke Stephen via email lstephen@sheepgenetics.org.au
