Note From Kendra

Dear Friends,

Back to school and fall spark an array of emotions for many people. It’s the ending of summer, which for many of us has been centered on connecting with friends and family that maybe we don’t see on a regular basis during the rest of the year.

If this time of year is leaving you with a blue feeling, don’t avoid it; just notice it. Try to connect to what it is that you are feeling. Is it an activity you will miss? Is it someone you will miss spending time with? Is it a change of routine? Is it the change in nature?

Take whatever it is and try to incorporate that into your life so you can continue into the fall and winter with things to look forward to. Try these few suggestions if you can’t put your finger on it just yet.

1. Create a list of people you want to stay in touch with, get your calendars out, and make it happen. If people are out of town, consider driving halfway and make a weekend getaway out of it. Make it happen.

2. Fall can be a great time to put together a group or to establish a gathering place once a month to be with people you really enjoy, like a walking group, bicycling group, walking meditation group, or even crafting buddies. Create the space in your schedule and let people know.

3. ‘Tis the continual season of giving back - paying it forward. Bake cookies for a neighbor, help someone prepare their home for winter, lend an ear to someone you haven’t talked with for a while. Give time instead of money.

Happy autumn from the midwest U.S.!

Peace and with love,

P.S. “Back to school” can be for anyone! It can be a time for you to learn something you have wanted to explore for a long time. Why wait? More here.

Archetype

Child: Nature

This archetype inspires deep, intimate bonding with natural forces and has a particular affinity for friendships with animals.  Although the Nature Child has tender, emotional qualities, it can also have a inner toughness and ability to survive-the resilience of Nature herself. Nature Children can develop advanced skills of communicating with animals, and in stories reflecting this archetype an animal often come to the rescue of tis child companion. Many veterinarians and animal-rights activist resonate with this archetype because they have felt a conscious rapport with animals since childhood. Other adults describe being in communication with nature spirits and learning to work in harmony with them in maintaining the order of nature.

The shadow aspect of the Nature Child manifests in a tendency to abuse animals and people and the environment.

A love of animals is not sufficient to qualify for this archetype, however. A life pattern of relating to animals in an intimate and caring way, to the extent that your psyche and spirit need these bonds as a crucial part of your own well-being, is your best clue in this direction.

Symbology

SWAN/Grace
Contributed by Anne Barton.

I was surprised to discover that I’d never written about Swan before in this newsletter since it’s keyword, Grace, is so often used in Kendra’s writings. The word ‘grace’ summons divinity in my mind – perhaps because of the song ‘Amazing Grace’?

I found this quotation, which added something more to the word, beyond the dictionary definition “elegance or beauty of form, manner, motion or action.”

“When a person expends the least amount of motion on one action, that is grace.“  —Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, Complete Works and Letters in Thirty Volumes, Letters, vol. 8, p. 11, “Nauka” (1976)

Key Concepts when Swan is Present:

  • Be at one with all planes of consciousness; heed your dreams.
  • Trust in Great Spirit's protection; the Universe will provide.
  • Honor your female intuitive side.
  • Accepting grace means going with the flow.
  • Accept the healing and transformation of your life.

.

Swan medicine teaches us to be at one with all planes of consciousness and to trust in Great Spirit’s protection. Swan tells you to accept your ability to know what lies ahead. If you are resisting your self-transformation, relax. It will be easier if you go with the flow. Stop denying that you know who is calling when the phone rings. Pay attention to your hunches and your gut knowledge, and honor your female, intuitive side.
In the world of Spirit, you need to pay attention to the unseen. You may sense or feel in a slightly different way, but this is gradual. Sometimes this shift is lost among your normal activities until you feel “spaced out.” At these moments it is time to reconnect to Mother Earth. Try these steps to handle the process of trusting your intuition:

  1. Notice your surroundings and touch the Earth with your feet, hands or both.
  2. Focus on one reality or the other. If you are being called to visit the Dreamtime, stop what you are doing and be still. Enter the silence and empty your mind of chatter. Be receptive and open so that the message may enter your consciousness.
  3. If you are just preoccupied, daydreaming, or “spacey,” you need to focus on doing some physical activity. Use the reasoning side of your brain to make a list of what you need to do next, and this will stop the clutter in your mind that may be causing the confusion.

If Swan has flown mightily into your journeys, she comes to tell you that sweet loveliness can hold within it strength without losing its own wondrous quality – let no one convince you otherwise. Know that you can attain the impossible dream because it already exists. Swim with the river of your life, and it will be revealed.

Health

Dinners on the Fly

Back to school can mean quick dinners on game nights for your family. Fall is also a high allergy season which creates additional inflammation in our body. For those with allergies and other autoimmune disorders, you may want to consider one of  these 5 choices when picking up dinner tonight.

Pay It Forward - Village Bicycle Project
I first read about this organization last year and was moved by Lovetta’s story, a women who learned how to ride a bike as an adult. I looked up similar organizations here in the US and there are quite a few. So depending on where you live, and are inspired by what you read and a lover of riding – consider paying it forward so a child or adult can experience the same benefits. OR be bold and start a similar project yourself! Click here.
