This month we welcome Gaylyn Williams as the Guest Contributor. We are really grateful to Gaylyn for the many materials she has developed over the years ranging from books on managing stress to raising finances, and all presented in the context of Christian spiritual growth. This Update includes two sets of resources. The first set deals with raising funds in Christian ministry and the second set primarily looks at the motivaton for money and other rewards in work.

Raising Finances and Friends
One of the main reasons why “fundraising” can be such a struggle is because the focus is on the money one receives (or needs) more than on the people who give it. It is easy to get into a mindset that says, “We’re the getters and others are the givers.” Or, “Our job is to get and our partners’ job is to give.” Consider these questions about raising support:
1. Do I see cultivating relationships with my partners, or potential partners, as something I have to do (a drudgery) or something I get to do (an opportunity)?
2. Do I feel that it detracts from my “real” work or is it a vital part of my work?
3. Do I really believe that my partners also can benefit through me and our working together?
How you answer these questions reveals whether you are relating to those who give to your work as donors or as partners. When you change how you relate to those who support your work, you can dramatically increase your support base. When people know you care about them and are genuinely interested in their lives, they will become more and more committed to you.

Exploring Money and Motivation

Final Thoughts about Raising Finances
Raising and maintaining your support doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You can transform your experience by changing your paradigm from seeing supporters as the givers and yourself as the receiver to seing yourselves as mutual partners.
