Do you have earthquake insurance?

With the recent earthquakes in Sedgwick and surrounding counties, now may be a good time to look at earthquake coverage as an additional option on your homeowner policy.  Surprisingly, earthquake coverage is more affordable than you might think and can offer significant financial support in the event of an earthquake.

Insurance companies can have slight variances in how they protect against earthquake losses, but they will typically cover damages to the home, outbuildings and personal belongings.  When companies rate your home for earthquake coverage, they will look at the construction and framing of the home, foundation type, etc.  If you have a masonry home or even masonry veneer, companies will likely rate these properties higher; and depending on your company, insureds can either exclude or include damage to masonry in their coverages.

Deductibles can vary greatly from company to company, but they are usually based on the home’s replacement value.  As an example: a home is insured for $200,000 at replacement cost.  If the insurance provider offers a 5% earthquake deductible, you would have a $10,000 deductible for earthquake damage.  This may seem high, but damages to the foundation, outbuildings and personal items may be considerably higher.

Visit with one of our agents at The Bennett Agency about earthquake coverage and what it can do for your homeowner policy.
