Hear the personal stories and work philosophies of our five Cultural Medallion heroes this year, whose works have pushed artistic frontiers, informed our identity as a society and nurtured our art-makers of tomorrow.

On Sun 28 Oct, 3pm, J M Sali and Milenko Prvacki will talk about their journey from other shores and how they came to love and see this place as home. The session will be moderated by Arun Mahizhnan.

On Sun 4 Nov 3pm, Ho Ho Ying, Jennifer Tham and T Sasitharan tackle the topic of What makes art Singaporean? The session will be moderated by Kwok Kian-Woon, Associate Provost (Student Life) and Head of Sociology Division at the Nanyang Technological University.

NAC announced in early-Oct the eight arts organisations receiving funding through its inaugural Seed Grant (Organisational Development) scheme. NAC will commit $350,000 to these organisations for the rest of FY12 (ending 31 March 2013), and will support them up to a total of $2.42 million for three years, from FY13 to FY15.

The call for the next batch of Seed Grants applications will commence mid-Nov 2012. Interested applicants are advised to check our Seed Grants page for further updates.

Eight local arts practitioners have been commissioned to bring the arts to the children and youths of seven Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs). Funding for the seven projects will be supported by the Arts Opportunity Fund (AOF), which derives from public donations made through the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts’ give2arts portal. The Singapore Arts Festival Review Committee which convened in July would like to share some of their ideas on the future Arts Festival. If you’d like to be part of this, please register your interest with us. There will be four public feedback sessions conducted in English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil taking place from 29 Oct to 1 Nov 2012, 7pm to 9pm, at the National Library Drama Centre. Led by Dr. Peter O’Connor, the Director at the Critical Research Unit in Applied Theatre at the University of Auckland, this five-session workshop offers practitioners tools and tips on how to design meaningful programmes that are able to assess their social impact on communities.

Open to artists and social/community workers with experience in organising arts programmes specifically for non-artist communities, the workshop will be held from 19 to 28 Nov 2012 at the Goodman Arts Centre.

The NAC-ExxonMobil Concert in the Park series returns 11 Nov 2012, Sun, at the all-new Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park (Grand Lawn I) – so save the date! Join us from 4.00pm to 6.30pm for an afternoon of crafts, music and dance that is free and fun for the entire family. From easy-listening tunes by multi-talented singer, Jessica Soo, to an energetic Gangnam-style Zumba dance. There is definitely something for everyone!

Supported by NAC, Art Outreach is leading free tours designed to provide the general public with a comprehensive overview of Gillman Barracks as a premier contemporary art destination. Tours are available on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 Oct to 11 Nov 2012 at 11.00am to 12.30pm and 4.00pm to 5.30pm.

The 2012 Cultural Medallion and Young Artist Award recipients

The 2012 Cultural Medallion and Young Artist Award Ceremony was held at the Istana on 17 Oct 2012 and attended by some 200 guests. President Tony Tan conferred the 2012 Cultural Medallion on Ho Ho Ying, Jennifer Tham, JM Sali, Milenko Prvacki and T Sasitharan for their outstanding artistic achievements and distinguished contributions to Singapore’s arts and cultural landscape. Senior Minister of State (ICA) Lawrence Wong presented the Young Artist Award to Brian Gothong Tan, Darren Ng Tzer Huei, Genevieve Chua, Liao Jiekai, Looi Wan Ping, O Thiam Chin, Tan Wee Lit, Zhuo Zihao and Zizi Azah for their artistic and leadership potential.
