Webinar | Screening for Viral Hepatitis within Behavioral Health Organizations. July 9 (2:30 - 4 pm). First of 2 part series: learn practices for the effective identification, treatment, and prevention of viral hepatitis. Topic areas will include epidemiology, public health and psychological issues and concerns, strategies for outreach and patient engagement in treatment.

Webinar | Coverage of Hepatitis C Testing Under the Affordable Care Act. July 10th (2-3 PM). Explores the current USPSTF recommendation for HCV and how each payer currently can cover HCV screening, which is dependent on the state.

2nd Annual African American Hep C Action Day! July 25th.
To help increase Hep C awareness, testing among baby boomers, and access to treatment, the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. (NBLCA) invites public health, community partners, and the general public across the nation to participate in the second annual National African American Hepatitis C Action Day (NAAHCA). Take Action! NBLCA has developed a toolkit  to assist organizations interested in promoting and planning events for NAAHCA.  Upload and view events in the events section.   • Tuesday, July 22nd (5:30-7:30pm) – Hepatitis B Educational Seminar (at 455 1st Ave, NYU Langone Medical Center, 1st Floor Smilow Multipurpose Room). Free Tickets – RSVP here.  Seminar aimed for medical & nursing students. Speaker will be Dr. Vinh Pham, Infectious Disease Specialist at Bellevue.
  • Thursday, July 24th (7-9pm) – “Another Life” Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion (at 25 W. 43rd St #1000, CUNY Asian American/Asian Research Institute, 18th Floor, Room C/D). Free tickets – RSVP here.  Aimed for students & community members.

Check Hep C is a patient support program that provides free patient navigation and care coordination services to help people with Hep C get into care and through treatment as easily as possible. The program is currently provided at 4 sites in the Bronx, Harlem and Brooklyn. Refer today!
The Psychosocial Readiness Evaluation and Preparation for Hepatitis C Treatment (PREP-C) is a free interactive online tool that facilitates assessment of a patient’s psychosocial readiness to begin Hep C treatment, and make a treatment plan to improve treatment readiness.

Policy Watch

Viral Hepatitis Testing Act of 2013, HR3723. Introduced December 12, 2013 in the US House of Representatives to amend the Public Health Service Act to revise and extend the program for viral hepatitis surveillance, education, and testing.

Bill A9124A-2013. Authorizes nurse practitioners and physicians to administer tests to determine the presence of the hepatitis C virus.

Pharmacy Choice: NYS Law A05502B  prohibits health insurers from requiring the insured purchase prescribed drugs from mail order pharmacy.
  • If the consumer does not have a clear option, a complaint can be filed through Attorney General's Health Care Consumer's Help Line 1-800-342-3736.

US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Recommendations!   Screening for Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Nonpregnant Adolescents and Adults. Grade B Recommendation.
