Bahrain Watch is happy to be part of the Kleptocracy Tour II - to be held in London on Tuesday, April 12th 2016. During this tour, Bahrain Watch members will be discussing properties that were exposed in a 2014 Financial Times investigation, which Bahrain Watch was involved in. This investigation exposed how the Royal Family in Bahrain used a variety of companies as investment vehicles to transfer over $1 billion from land reclamation projects in Bahrain into prime London real estate.
The inaugural Kleptocracy Tour last February was met with considerable success, and sparked interest in the issue of foreign kleptocrats getting their hands onto London real estate. It was covered in The Economist and The Times, amongst other publications.
While the topic is being discussed by an increasing number of national newspapers, NGOs and mayoral candidates, the irony of David Cameron hosting the Global Anti-Corruption Summit on the 12th of May hasn’t escaped us. As a symbolic one-month countdown to the Summit, we will be running a media preview of the second Kleptocracy Tour on the 12th of April.
The structure of the tour will remain unchanged, but we will be adding case studies from Bahrain, Nigeria, and Egypt to the list of properties that have been bought with cash stolen from the world’s neediest nations.
Your tour guides will be:
Vladimir Ashurkov - leader of the Russian opposition in exile and CEO of the Anti-Corruption Foundation;
Chido Dunn - money-laundering investigator with Global Witness;
Oliver Bullough - journalist and author of The Last Man in Russia;
Ala’a Shehabi - co-founder of Bahrain Watch;
Dr Andrew Foxall - Director of the Russia Studies Centre;
Roman Borisovich - anticorruption activist and star of From Russia With Cash documentary;
Luke Harding - author of A Very Expensive Poison: the Definitive Story of the Murder of Litvinenko;
Ben Judah - journalist and author of recently released This is London;
Plus a Transparency International representative, on the topic of offshore companies owning properties in London, and other prominent investigative journalists.
This spectacular 3-hour journey through the heart of London will be conducted from the comfort of a luxury tour bus departing from the Victoria Embankment and Horse Guards Avenue intersection at 9:30am on Tuesday 12th April 2016.
Should you not be able to attend the tour on the 12th of April, but would like to take part in one of the tours scheduled for May, please do let us know.
