This Week's Scripture Verse

 Mark 3:20-35
Jesus entered a house. A crowd gathered again so that it was impossible for him and his followers even to eat. When his family heard what was happening, they came to take control of him.
They were saying, “He’s out of his mind!” The legal experts came down from Jerusalem.
Over and over they charged, “He’s possessed by Beelzebul. He throws out demons with the authority of the ruler of demons.” When Jesus called them together he spoke to them in a parable:
“How can Satan throw Satan out?  A kingdom involved in civil war will collapse. And a house torn apart by divisions will collapse. If Satan rebels against himself and is divided, then he can’t endure. He’s done for. No one gets into the house of a strong person and steals anything without first tying up the strong person. Only then can the house be burglarized. I assure you that human beings will be forgiven for everything, for all sins and insults of every kind. But whoever insults the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. That person is guilty of a sin with consequences that last forever.” He said this because the legal experts were saying, “He’s possessed by an evil spirit.” His mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside and sent word to him, calling for him. A crowd was seated around him, and those sent to him said, “Look, your mother, brothers, and sisters are outside looking for you.” He replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Looking around at those seated around him in a circle, he said, “Look, here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does God’s will is my brother, sister, and mother.”

Update from Pastor Mary

Hi Friends,

It's been such a blessing to worship in person with many of you! Now that we are back in person and many of our COVID restrictions have been lifted some of you are asking about our children's ministry, choir, etc.

We will be making a formal announcement soon, but let me share that Megan Gilley will begin
July 1 to direct our Children's Ministry. We will build back our program slowly beginning with a Children's Worship time after the Time at the Steps. This will be an informal time of learning in conjunction with that day's sermon. You will be hearing more from Megan soon.

Lindsay has great plans for the choir and will give you those details as well.

In the meantime, let me say that I am grateful for the support I have received from our Church leadership during this past year. I am grateful for our new staff,  Dr. Lindsay Whelan and Moises Sol. Their part in our worship services has impacted my faith as I am sure it has yours.

And I am thankful for each of you. In many ways I feel like I am just getting to know you
and I am thankful that you have been patient as I learn your names.
God is indeed doing new things among us and through us.

Because of Jesus,
Pastor Mary

Our Communion offering for June is The Raining Season (TRS), a non-denominational Christian organization that runs an orphanage (“the Center”) and two half-way houses with around 100 kids total and 63 local staff in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

GVUMC has supported TRS for about 10 years through offerings, individual sponsorships and material provisions transported by traveling teams to the orphanage. We (Jeff and Cheryl Miller) have traveled over to Sierra Leone every year that travel has been allowed (missing only the year of Ebola and the year of Covid) bringing our greetings, gifts and encouragement to the children and staff who have become family to us. We have had fellow teammates from GVUMC travel with us, including our District Superintendent Pastor Morley.

Our church sends the offering in support of the organization, particularly in the name of a special needs child named Elva who was brought to the center at the time we began our relationship with TRS. The Raining Season is unique among orphanages in Sierra Leone for accepting and providing quality care for special needs children.

The orphanage was put on lockdown for Covid just as it had been during the Ebola epidemic, but it has now been opened up and the kids have returned to school. We continue to pray for the health of the kids and staff during this period of reopening; African nations are extremely vulnerable as international travel resumes due to the lack of available medical care even in “normal” times, and the slow progress of vaccine provision to that area of the world.

There is an executive team going over to Sierra Leone at the end of June to evaluate the situation for reopening travel to the orphanage and we hope to be able to go on our regular November travel dates this year!

Here is Elva, getting ready for the annual November party at the Center.
