The Book of Joy

During Pastor Mary's sermon this past Sunday she referenced The Book of Joy - Lasting Happiness in a Changing World.

In The Book of Joy, the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu discuss the importance interdependence plays in experiencing a state of joy. The Dalai Lama points out that our whole society has a materialistic culture - “In the materialistic way of life, there’s no concept of friendship, no concept of love, just work - like a machine."  Desmond Tutu supports this need for interdependence with the African concept of Ubuntu - we are who we are through one another, our humanity is bound up in one another.
Tutu - says “A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole”. He goes on to say that ubuntu also implies that "a person is diminished when others are humiliated or dismissed, when others are tortured or oppressed, or treated as if they were less than who they are.” Tutu says that "we show our humanity by how we see ourselves not as apart from others but from our connection to others."
