THE BOSTON POETRY MARATHON WILL TAKE PLACE ONLINE FOR 2020
[BOSTON, July 30, 2020] Puppies and kittens! Cupcakes and rainbows! Unicorns and sunshine! This year has SUUUUUCKED, but the Boston Poetry Marathon, taking place online for 2020, will be AWESOME! It will be a bright spot in a really tough year!!!
The 2020 Boston Poetry Marathon will take place remotely from 7-10pm on Thursday, August 6, 7-10pm on Friday, August 7, and ten solid hours (100 poets in a day!) from 12pm-10pm on Saturday, August 8.
Overall, close to 150 poets will be participating, including Eileen Myles, Kazim Ali, Lloyd Schwartz, Danielle Legros George, and Dorothea Lasky, among many other notable participants. As is usual with the Boston Poetry Marathon, each participant gets just a short allotment of time, this year 5 minutes apiece.
The Boston Poetry Marathon is an over 20-year long tradition. The event brings together poets from across the state and region, representing everywhere from Boston, the North Shore, and western Mass, to Providence, Maine, and New York, among many other states. In fact, readers have come from around the globe to participate, some as far as Israel and the UK. Each poet reads for a short designated time during the weekend-long poetry reading festival.
This year's virtual poetry festival will feature a special Friday event. Speakers that night will look back on 2 decades of Boston Poetry Marathon history, with previous organizers and long-time participants sharing memories and stories of past marathons and general Boston poetry lore, along with reading their own work. Friday will also include a tribute to the late Kevin Killian, from poets Lee Ann Brown and Tony Torn.
Those who wish to watch the Boston Poetry Marathon can do so over one of three of the BPM social media channels: YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter/Periscope. Links to those channels can be found at https://bostonpoetrymarathon.wordpress.com/watch/ Admission is free, but a $10+ donation to the fundrasier is recommended.
Bridget Eileen and Suzanne Mercury return as artistic co-directors for the Boston Poetry Marathon, for the fourth year in a row. This year they are joined by two new organizers, Xtina Strong and Christina Liu. The organizing team hails from across New England: Suzanne in the Boston area, Xtina in Vermont, and Bridget and Christina both based out of Rhode Island.
"We have pulled together this year’s virtual event during a very challenging time," artistic co-director Suzanne Mercury said. "The response from the poetry community has been overwhelming and filled with love. This virtual event will be well attended. Nothing can keep this vibrant poetry community down!"
