NCD Alliance WHA75 Advocacy Briefing now available!

The NCD Alliance with support from our network has prepared a briefing note for the upcoming 75th World Health Assembly (WHA75) highlighting key advocacy messages on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) relevant agenda items.

The NCD related WHA75 agenda reflects the progress made in combating NCDs and the importance of action at global and national levels. This is timely given that we are three years ahead of the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs. The prominence of NCDs in many Member States' priorities within the context of the ongoing pandemic is welcomed. On the whole, we align with the NCD agenda outlined in official documents and strongly recommend that Member States adopt the omnibus decision on NCDs (Agenda Item 14.1). There are opportunities for strengthening the current text and associated actions to be outlined in this briefing. Our recommendations are further detailed in the briefing note.

WHA75 side event: Access to care for people living with NCDs

Access Accelerated, NCD Alliance, C/Can, PATH, World Bank Group and World Heart Federation are glad to invite you to join them at their 75th World Health Assembly side event on 24th May. The event, 'Access to care for people living with NCD: Gathering to celebrate 5 years of joint impact', will take the form of a cocktail evening with short speeches and a poster exhibition centred on the impact of programmes and partnerships in the NCD response. The event is invite-only and will take place at La Vie des Champs, Geneva from 18:00 to 21:00 CEST.

Under pressure: hypertension and kids

Today is World Hypertension Day! Hypertension - or high blood pressure - puts millions of kids and teens at high risk for future NCDs such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. Among children and adolescents, hypertension prevalence has increased fourfold in the past 30 years, from 1.3% to 6.0% of kids. This makes paediatric hypertension a major public health threat and pushes millions of children towards a chronically sick future. Our new information page and short video explain what we can to do act on NCDs!

WHO has launched the NCD Progress Monitor 2022 which documents how Member States are doing to prevent and control major noncommunicable diseases and their risk factors. Out of 194 countries, 126 have set time-bound national targets for NCDs based on WHO guidance. Encouragingly, 77 countries fully achieved more indicators in 2022 compared to the previous NCD Progress Monitor published in 2020. There is also improvement in the development of clinical guidelines for NCD management.
