Dear colleagues,
With less than a month until the opening of the UN General Assembly in New York, below is a snapshot of relevant high-level meetings taking place in September for the NCD community. This series of events are important milestones on the road to ensuring health and NCDs are central to the post-2015 development agenda.
Sunday 22 September: Advancing Regional Recommendations on Post-2015: A Dialogue between Civil Society, Governments and UN Representatives, UN HQ, 14h-17h
The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) is hosting a civil society dialogue that focuses on the findings of the UN-NGLS consultation on the four main UN post-2015 reports submitted to the Secretary-General. Read the NCD Alliance submission to the consultation here.
This event is open to all interested representatives of civil society, governments, and the UN system. For those not able to attend in person, it will also be webcast at and live-streamed on the World We Want platform. For more information on the event, please click here
Monday 23 September: UN High-Level Meeting on Disability and Development (HLMDD), UN HQ, all day
The theme of the HLMDD is “The way forward: a disability inclusive development agenda towards 2015 and beyond.” It will result in an Outcome Document supporting the realisation of the MDGs, and exploring the post-2015 goals for persons with disabilities. For more information, please click here
The NCD Alliance, Help Age International, and Handicap International will launch a policy brief to highlight the relationship between NCDs, ageing, disability, and development at the HLMDD.
Wednesday 25 September: Special Event on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Post-2015 Development Agenda, UN HQ, all day
This Special Event on the MDGs will take stock of progress and gaps in achieving the MDGs, and will also provide guidance on the post-2015 process. The day will include an opening and closing plenary, and two sets of parallel roundtables. The expected outcome will be a brief document, including a “roadmap” or timeline for defining the post-2015 agenda. For those not able to attend in person, the event will be webcast at
Release of the UN Secretary General Annual Report on the MDGs and Road to Post-2015
To inform the discussions at the MDG Special Event, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has released his annual report on implementing the MDGs and further steps to advance the post-2015 development agenda. The report is entitled “A life of dignity for all: accelerating progress towards the MDGs and advancing the UN development agenda beyond 2015”, and can be downloaded here.

The report stresses sustainable development as the "global guiding principle" for the post-2015 era, and recognises reducing the burden of NCDs as a priority for health and development in post-2015. We are extremely encouraged by this inclusion.
