More than a million visitors will enjoy the tradition of Chinese New Year with the City of Sydney's Chinese New Year of the Fire Rooster Celebrations from 27 January to 12 February.

Sydney's reknowned CNY celebrations continues despite the loss of the famous George Street Chinese New Year parade that enlivened the city for 17 years.  2016's Year of the Monkey had Sydney come to life with the launch of 12 Chinese Astrology Sculptures spread throughout Sydney's CBD.  This coming year. the Chinese Astrrology Sculptures will be placed along Circular Quay as the feature for Sydney's 2017 Chinese New Year celebations.   Two main Rooster lanterns will be the official Year of the Rooster Sculptures, one at the Sydney Opera House and a most welcomed Rooster sculpture will be placed in Chinatown, Sydney’s cultural heart for Chinese and Asian businesses and community .

“From its humble beginnings in Chinatown, the festival now extends all the way to Sydney Harbour and last year attracted 1.3 million people, making it the third largest annual event in Sydney." said the City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.  Read more HERE

Aldi 's Australian Springboard Into China Market

The 7th largest global grocery group German retailer Aldi will expand int o China in late 2017 promoting and selling Australian brands for their strong China reputation for being clean, pure and of high quality.

The majority of products sold through the online service will be sourced from already existing Australian suppliers at Aldi, giving these suppliers access to 1.4 billion Chinese shoppers.

“ALDI has enjoyed strong and long lasting relationships with many of our Australian suppliers since our first stores opened in 2001,” an Australian Aldi spokesperson said.

“Aldi likely wanted to only move into a region it was comfortable in, as there would be distinct cultural differences between the European/Australian market and the Asian market,” said Gary Mortimer, Queensland University of Technology Business School.  Read more HERE

Businesses & NBN Roll Out

Across Australia right now there are teams of installers connecting the NBN to businesses to the network. In most cases, this involves laying fibre optic cables under the street.  At this stage the NBN enters Sydney CBD early next year.

To find out when the NBN is coming to your neighbourhood, you can check the NBNco website.

About: The National Broadband Network (NBN) is an Australia-wide project funded by the Federal Government to provide all homes and businesses with a fast, reliable connection to the internet.

The current Federal Government has committed to build a mixed technology network, connecting to the core network using fast fibre-optic cable and others using the existing copper phone lines.

Transport for NSW

How would you describe the feedback about Sydney's CBD transformation?  It’s an exciting time. Working for Transport for NSW and seeing the significant changes to the CBD already occur with the train station upgrades, the opening of Wynyard Walk and the commencement of CBD and South East Light Rail construction occurring.

I think people across the CBD, be it residents, businesses or people who come into the CBD for work, are excited by what’s happening. It’s not without its challenges, there is a lot of work underway, however we have seen a lot of positive behavioural changes made by businesses, employees, and road and transport users to keep Sydney moving during this time of change.

Tell us what you're most excited about in the next year /s?  The progression and completion of a number of big transport projects in the CBD. In 2017 the Barangaroo Ferry Hub and Wynyard Station Upgrade phase two will be complete revitalising the western precinct of the CBD. We will also see the CBD and South East Light Rail and Sydney Metro ramping up work in the city – it’s a really exciting time for the CBD and for all of Sydney.

How long have you been a HCC supporter?  Transport for NSW has been working with the Haymarket Chamber of Commerce (HCC) for some time now and I’m pleased we can work together on the light rail project. It has been  enjoyable to work with such passionate people in the Haymarket precinct and with the local Haymarket community throughout construction of light rail. Together, we are implementing a number of joint projects, including the recent Market of Lights on George Street, in which 100 monkeys were placed in the trees along George Street to reinvigorate the area during construction. Transport for NSW looks forward to continue working with the HCC and to look for more opportunities to collaborate in the future.

Describe Haymarket/Chinatown in three words?  Most unique area.

Any advice to businesses for 2017-18?  As construction of the CBD and South East Light Rail continues to progress it is vital that businesses along the light rail alignment keep informed with the latest news from the construction team at ALTRAC. There is a lot of work happening and there will be changes that businesses and residents need to be aware of.

We look forward to continue to work with the HCC members and businesses and community to support them during construction. There are a number of forums that are regularly held to keep businesses, residents and the community informed and as part of these, our technical teams are able to talk through the details to ensure together we can mitigate the impacts of construction.
