Challenging Times

Despite the hottest and driest year on record and destructive effects of the bushfires, as we move into 2020 there is one positive aspect that has emerged - the strong sense and spirit of community that has been harnessed locally, nationally and globally. This has resulted in the substantial donations collected to support the victims effected by the bushfires, their communities, fire services and thousands of wildlife that been destroyed. To add our support, HCC will donate parts of the funds raised from our HCC CNY Banquet to the NSW Rural Fire Services and as there is little reprieve in sight, we will also look for future support and aid from our community during these unprecedented times.

Forecast - CNY of the Metal Rat 25 Jan 2020 - 4 Feb 2021
Forecast to be a powerful and impactful year,  many people will be travelling to make money, study and other reasons in 2020. The main concerns for this year will be wealth, power and pragmatism in focusing on repair, rejuvenation and improvements with a most significant forecast being that natural disasters will continue to occur for decades to come, so leadership and collective power will be very important for our future.

Business
The elements of the year are favorable for IT, banking, shipping, and transportation industries as high technology will continue to move into a new phase with robots continuing to replace more jobs. The share market will fluctuate, however, the wealth element will be strong for share investors in the middle of the year.  Property development will be conservative with mid and low price properties remaining stable. Industries relating to shipping, networking, and delivery will flourish.

Overall
Rat is one of the four Peach Blossoms. It will be a romantic year for most people and it is  a good year to deepen your love with your loved one and family. This year is good for travel, music, entertainment, romance related business. Education, publishing, and cultural development will be slow in the first half of the year, and will pick up in the second half of the year.

Sydney's Exciting Lunar New Year Festivities
City of Sydney
This year Haymarket and Chinatown welcomes for the first time the City of Sydney's Lunar Lanes Festival for the Chinese New Year (CNY) of the Rat 2020 on Saturday 25 January that will bring life, music, stalls, entertainment and the wonderful traditional Lion dancers throughout Sussex, Dixon, Little Hay Streets right through to Darling Square from 2pm - 10pm.  This will be an event not to be missed so we hope to see you there.

It is hard to believe that this time last year that HCC with NSW Transport launched Haymarket Heartbeat to celebrate the CNY of the Pig 2019. The huge popularity of the event reflected the community and Sydney's joy and desire to celebrate CNY in Chinatown and Haymarket. HCC is very thankful that the City of Sydney's launch of the annual Lunar Lanes festival will bring for the first time Darling Square, Chinatown and Haymarket together with amazing and exciting festivities to harness the diversity, creativity richness and joy this culturally auspicious period represents.

LUNAR LANES Saturday 25 January 2020 @ Haymarket

The party starts at 2pm at the Darling Square stage with an exciting line up of contemporary music including Malaysian drumming, Vietnamese pop and Asian-Australian musicians, producers and DJ’s.

As the sun goes down, the festivities will get underway in Haymarket with the Lunar Spectacular Show at the Sussex Street stage. The concert will feature over 300 community performers ready to share their culture with traditional and contemporary dance, Korean percussion, Japanese hip hop and fashion shows with international performers including the Shaanxi Performing Arts Troupe from China, and Seoul’s top b-boy crew, MB Crew. From 9pm, the streets will be filled with the sounds of Filipino-Australian band, Erween.

Street vendors and craft stalls will pop-up all across the district as visitors weave their way through art installations including the Chinatown Lantern Curtain and two 2.8 metre tall, golden robotic rats designed by Claudia Chan Shaw in Dixon Street Mall

With amusement rides, carnival games, face painting and Vietnamese woodblock craft workshops there’s something for the whole family. There will be roving performers throughout Chinatown and of course the popular and traditional lion and dragon dancers, with more than a dozen performances bringing good luck to the Year of the Rat through the evening.

Lock Out Laws End Today

Effective as of today, Sydney’s controversial 2014 lockout laws will be scrapped in the CBD and Oxford Street. The restrictive laws will remain in place throughout Kings Cross though, because the Joint Select Committee Parliamentary inquiry into Sydney’s Night Time Economy found that the lockout laws had not had a sufficient impact on alcohol-related violence in the area to repeal them

Venues will no longer be obliged to refuse entry to customers after 1.30am, and last drinks will be extended by 30 minutes (to 3.30am) for venues with good compliance records. NSW bottle shops will be open until midnight or 11pm on Sundays with small-bar capacity is also being raised from 100 to 120 patrons.

Despite all the lockout law controversy we are united in supporting a strong, safe and responsible Sydney night economy.

Sydney's Light Rail SAFETY

14th December 2019 Sydney Light Rail Launch
Featuring 19 stops, 12 km long and over 30 years since Sydney had a central light rail - Sydney's CBD light rail was launched over the weekend.

Transport for NSW has launched a safety campaign to educate people on the best practices to stay safe around Sydney’s new light rail.

The campaign features an array of Sydneysiders explaining how to best cycle, drive and walk the streets. Tips include riding bikes straight across the tracks to avoid getting wheels caught, queuing across intersections, and checking both ways before crossing the street for oncoming trams.

To ensure the transition for pedestrians, cars and cyclists this campaign is essential for the Sydney Light Rail safe integration throughout the city.
