MEMBER PROFILE

Simon Chan
President of HCC
Director
 Art Atrium and SCA Architects

How long has your business been in Haymarket?  My architectural practice was located in Haymarket from 1987 to 2003.  We relocated to Bondi Junction after I purchased my property there for our business.

Could you indicate what makes your business competitive in your industry and local area?  Both our art gallery and architectural practice are essentially in the service industry and we always strive to improve the quality of our services to our clients.

What changes have you observed in the local area and business community during this time?  There has been a substantial influx of new migrants from China, both in terms of new businesses as well as consumers, to the Haymarket area. Local businesses need to adapt to the demands and expectation of these potential customers in order to maximise their business opportunities.  Being able to speak Mandarin is starting to become essential.

Why do you think the Haymarket Chamber attracts so many members?  Haymarket Chamber has built up a good profile and reputation since its inception and is proactive in organising networking functions for members and friends as well as taking an active role and interest in the development of Haymarket area in general by engaging with local government and other authorities.

Could you describe Haymarket in three words?  Three Cs - Cosmopolitan, Cuisine & Culture.

What do you see as happening in 2014-15?
Major plans  and the redevelopment of the Entertainment Centre as well as adjoining areas at Broadway and the UTS campus will create significant opportunities in the long term even though there will be some short term negative impact.

What is one of your favourite quotes?
Life is a rollercoaster journey with lots of peaks and valleys along the way and we should always pick ourselves up when we are down so we can enjoy the trip back up to the top. –  my own quote.
