America Reads Program Recap

We are excited to share the data recap of our 2019-2020 America Reads Program.

The federal program, started in 1996, was built off the Department of Education's work-study program. The program provides part-time employment for college students who tutor preschool, elementary, and middle school children in math and reading.

When the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools in March 2020, the program adapted to the change and began filming videos of the Wichita State students reading books and posted them on the Wichita State Career Development Center's website.

Teri Robertson, Office Manager for the Wichita State University Career Development Center, has taken on the role of America Reads program coordinator for the past two years, and has done an excellent job expanding the program on campus. Applied Learning Highlight: Sierra Hernandez

Sierra Hernandez, a graphic design major from Wichita, Kan. is interning at GoCreate this summer as a Graphic Design Intern.

Hernandez assists in the continued development and advancement of the GoCreate communication plan. She also designs quality materials for print (brochures, flyers, posters, etc.), develops social media content, and even helps GoCreate’s members with graphic design related tasks.

“GoCreate has given me the opportunity to exercise my design skills in a creative environment. This experience has helped me prepare for client work while also allowing me to express my creativity," said Hernandez.

Register now for the Virtual Part-Time Student Employment Fair

The Career Development Center invites you to register and attend our Virtual Part-Time Student Employment Fair from 1-3 p.m. Friday, July 17, for all your on-campus position recruitment needs. (This event replaces the On-Campus Job Fair.)

At this new event, you can meet, recruit, and receive resumes from Wichita State University students in one convenient online location. If you have open student assistant or graduate assistant positions you plan to fill for the upcoming academic year – this event is for you!

Space is limited; register today. We are offering this event to our campus partners free of charge, but you must register before Friday, July 10.

Kufahl Receives Conference Scholarship

Kim Kufahl, Assistant Director of Marketing and Communication for Wichita State’s Career Development Center, has been selected as the Kansas Association of Colleges and Employers current membership scholarship recipient to attend the 2020 Southern Association of College and Employers Annual Conference.

Kufahl oversees all efforts in branding, communication, and marketing for the Career Development Center, which include all print and electronic materials, social media, special events, email and electronic newsletter campaigns, and more. Kufahl is the 2020 president of the Public Relations Society of Kansas.

The Career Development Center in Brennan III is open for in-person appointments Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. We also have virtual hours Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
