Amsterdam
Saturday 17 January 2015

Thank you for joining us to Amsterdam on Saturday. We are going with a group of 30-35. It's not yet clear what the weather will do with 3 degrees and 40% chance for precipitation, but it may very well become a lovely day. I am looking forward to a great day in the Dutch Capital.
Please read this mail carefully. Most important is to come on time for departure. You don't need a ticket, just come to the bus because your name is on our list. If you would like to go to the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum, make sure to reserve your entrance tickets beforehand to avoid the lines. Entrance time is 13h00 or 13h30. You can lunch inside. Please also take HEADPHONES with you as our bus has private screens. Your MP3 or smart phone ones will work just fine.
  • The meeting time is 07h45 at Place Schuman (bus stop next to the KBC and ING banks on the roundabout, see below). The latest departure time is at 08h00.
We may leave before 08h00 if we've not yet heard from you by 7h50. If you fear you are going to be late, call immediately with 0495-345144 or send a text message. Don't delay! Tip: just take one bus, tram or metro earlier than you would normally do. Time flies when you wait together. Also there is a Paul coffee place at just 2-3 minutes walking towards Place Jourdan.

Our estimated return time is 23h30 or slightly later. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. See you on Saturday!

Knowing your way around
Although you will get a map of the city center in the bus, you could see/download already one here (pdf). Also, maybe you would like to download one or more Amsterdam tourist apps on your smartphone.

Information about the museums
Many of you were in Amsterdam before and have already seen the Rijksmuseum (re-opened in 2013) or the Van Gogh Museum. Therefore we are splitting up the group. It is advisable to book your tickets before Saturday as they regularly sell out (and to avoid the cue). This is especially the case for the Van Gogh Museum. If you do not want to go there, but visit another museum, make sure to arrange your own tickets.
  1. Go to the websites of the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum
  2. Select the number of tickets, the correct date and whether you would like a audio-guide (€5 at both museums)
  3. For the Van Gogh Museum, make sure to select 13h00 or 13h30 as the starting time.
  4. You can have lunch in the museum or a quick snack at the Museum Square.
At 16h40 at the latest we gather at the canal next to Prinsengracht 444, Dikker & Thijs Fenice Hotel (bridge of Leidsestraat, just 2 minutes from Leidseplein). We first sail over the Prinsengracht (with Anne Frank House) to Central Station, followed by the full Amsterdam Light Festival route.
The Indonesian cuisine is very popular in Holland due to the many immigrants from this country who brought this fantastic food with them after Indonesia's independence at the end of the 1940's. At Indrapura restaurant, right on Rembrandt Square, you will be served a wonderful rice table with several choices of vegetables, meats and seafood. If you still would like to join, please just send an email to info@expatclub.org. A seat at the table costs €32,50.
There are virtually no central bus parking spots in Amsterdam, so the driver will have to pick us up somewhere. Come to the Mr. Visser Plein next to the Jewish Historic Museum by 21h00. The bus may only stop here for 10 minutes (fines are outrageously high), so please be on time for our departure. It is a 7-8 minutes walking from Rembrandt Square and it will be indicated (and explained) on the map you receive.
Meeting point: Place Schuman, next to KBC Bank. This is right next to Metro Stop Schuman.

Essential information:
  • Be on time, both for the departure (07h45) and return (21h00).
  • Bring a valid travel document. We are going to another country.
  • Don't bring your ticket copy. Your name is on the list.
  • Wear warm clothes / take a hat / windbreaker. We'll be outside for a good part of the day.
  • Take an umbrella or raincoat, if the forecasts are bad.
  • Watch your belongings. Pickpockets love your stuff!
  • Save this number for emergencies and leave your phone on as well: +32-495-345144
  • Bring a camera. You want to capture the memories!
