IN THE NEWS: THIS LIBRARY’S NOT FOR YOU OR ME. A library has new books by major authors, not to be read until 2114.
Scottish artist Katie Paterson is collecting 100 unpublished works that won’t be released in their writers’ lifetimes, or yours and mine. Norway has prepared a site to grow 1000 spruces to be made into the materials from which the novels will be printed for the Future Library. Turkish novelist Elif Shafak, a prominent feminist and critic of Turkish nationalism, presented her manuscript at this year’s ceremony. She describes writing a novel for the Future Library as “a secular act of faith” in a world that seems to have gone mad, a world that violently accentuates the differences between people instead of celebrating their common humanity. QUIRKY OLD LADIES FRONT AND CENTER
In the never-ending challenge of getting published, my short story “Carmen” is now available online through Short Edition’s national writing contest. (https://short-edition.com/en/story/5-min/carmen-6). You can visit online, read, comment, and “like” if you wish. (Please do so.) “Carmen” reveals a hidden side of an aging but courageous woman as two friends poke through her possessions and discuss her.
Short Edition is a French publisher of brief fiction “for loiterers and literati alike,” dispensed free in special machines. Distribution has now begun in the US. The literary experiences occur in unexpected places: from train stations to libraries to cafes, hotels, universities and Francis Ford Coppola’s wineries. The list goes on and on.
