President's Update: Happy New Year

The new year is here and while a lot of clubs in the mid-west and east coast are currently battling blizzards, teams on the west coast are getting the most out of the dry conditions and sunny days and having a kick already!

New Board Members? For any clubs who have elected their board members for the 2014 season, we ask that you please send their details to communications@usafl.com.

January 26 is Australia Day and a lot of clubs will use this as their first social event of the year. If you have a club event you wish to publicize, send it along to us at events@usafl.com. If you're looking for something to wear this Australia Day, Dan Milbourne of the Philly Hawks has been producing an annual Australia Day T-shirt for sale for a number of years now... check out his design for 2014 here »

Applications Wanted: USA Revolution Assistant Coach

The USA Revolution is the men’s national Australian Football representative team with American players selected from the United States Australian Football League (USAFL). The Revolution participate in the AFL International Cup (IC) held in Australia every 3 years and play Canada in the 49th Parallel Cup in the years leading up to the IC. The team is looking to improve on its 4th place finish, out of 18 nations, achieved at the 2011 IC.

The USAFL Welcomes a New Treasurer

The USAFL is proud to announce Karen Muiter as the new USAFL Treasurer, replacing the departing Keith Nelson. Karen, a graduate of Fordham University School of Law, has been a player with the New York Lady Magpies since 2011 and currently serves on the board of the New York Magpies. Of American and Australian heritage, Karen is looking forward to being a part of the USAFL and assisting with the growth of our great game. She will work closely with Keith over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition period.

G'day USA Australia Day Ausball Event

This Australia Day, in San Francisco, the first ever inter-club Ausball match will be held. As part of the Australia Day festivities being run by the San Francisco Australian American Chamber of Commerce, the Sacramento Suns ‘Sac Footy All-Stars”, will take on the Golden Gate Roos “SF Footy All-Stars”. In addition to this match, Ausball founders, Matt Bishop and Denis Ryan will also conduct a clinic for anyone from the general public who is interested in learning more and having a go themselves.

USAFL Mourns Tragic Loss of a Chicago Sawn

The USAFL is extremely sad to report that a player from the Chicago Swans was tragically killed in an hit-and-run just days before Christmas. 

James Rapley, 29, had been living in Chicago for the past six months, playing with the Swans. "He was so enthusiastic about playing and competing and while he was hard on the field, he was also a top bloke off it," said Jason Wilhem, Ruckman for the Swans, "[he was] Just one of those types of people you wanted to be around and talk with."

Denver Bulldog, Nick Auden Passes Away

The USAFL is saddened to announce the passing of former Denver Bulldog, Nick Auden. Many, not just in the US, but in the greater AFL community supported Nick in the "Save Locky's Dad" campaign to try to get him a new drug currently undergoing trials. From the Facebook page:

Nick and his family, aided by friends and supporters, fought an extraordinary battle with Melanoma. This is a time to pause, to remember our dear Nick (who became half a million people's dear Nick) and to support Amy, Lachlan, Hayley, and little Evan.
