News from the Office of Peacebuilding and Policy

In an effort to keep you updated about some of the big projects our office is working on, we will be circulating a monthly update newsletter! The newsletter will include policy updates, news from our working groups, and information about the various meetings, conferences and events our office has been engaged with over the past month. We hope that this information will be helpful as you find ways to engage with our work. 

Partners and Working Groups

  • Churches for Middle East Peace:
    • The 2020 CMEP Summit: Equal in God’s Eyes, with focus on Human Rights and Dignity for all in Israel and Palestine, took place on June 22. It was a 1-day online event with multiple keynote speakers, panels, and a congressional lobby portion.
  • Nigeria Working Group:
    • The Nigeria Working Group is planning a Roundtable with State Department to be held on June 30th with topline focus on Ongoing Conflict in the northeast and northwest in light of Covid-19.
  • National Council of Churches:
    • OPP director, Nathan Hosler, has been participating with the National Council of Churches Ecumenical Officer work to address changes in the ecumenical landscape.
  • Creation Justice Ministries:
    • OPP director, Nathan Hosler, was in consultation with Creation Justice Ministries’ costal resilience project as part of OPP’s creation care work.
  • Death Row Support Program:
    • OPP met with all the Death Row Support Project volunteers to hear about their work and commitments as part of incorporating DRSP’s work, as it is now a part of OPP.
  • Advocacy Network for Africa
    • AdNA held an online event on Covid-19 in commemoration of African Liberation Day on May 25th.
    • OPP helped to draft a statement with asks around robust funding for COVID-19 response on the continent to be utilized for subsequent congressional advocacy.

Recent Happenings

  • Hauerwas, The Peacemaker?
    • Nathan Hosler recorded a podcast with Paul Axton on his book, Hauerwas, The Peacemaker? You can find the podcast here.
  • Sign-on Letters:
    • OPP signed on to a WISC (Washington Interreligious Staff Community) letter addressing racism, militarism, and priorities for the NDAA with asks around decreasing the Pentagon budget, ending the 1033 Program, repealing the 2001 and 2002 AUMF and prohibiting use of DoD funds to build the border wall.
    • OPP also signed-on to a letter drafted by the Interfaith Immigration Coalition on detention and deportations.

Policy Updates: In The News

  • Immigration:
    • The U.S. Supreme Court decided in favor of keeping the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, and in doing so has protected DACA recipients. Read more here.
    • The White House issued a proclamation suspending entry of aliens who present a risk to the U.S. Labor Market following the Coronavirus Outbreak. This proclamation bars many categories of foreign workers and curbs immigration visas through the end of the year. Read the proclamation here.
  • Racial Justice:
    • President Trump signed an executive order to encourage police departments to improve training as the country recons with racial injustice. Read the executive order here.
    • OPP put out an action alert on Police Reform and COVID-19 Justice. Read it here.
    • Click here for research and analysis from the Urban Institute on how historical + ongoing public policies, institutional practices, and cultural narratives perpetuate racial inequalities & constrain mobility for communities of color.
