Policy Updates: In The News

  • Covid-19
    • Legislative Updates:
      • House passed sweeping legislation to respond to Covid-19 outbreak. The $100 billion coronavirus aid package includes:
        • Enhanced unemployment insurance
        • ensures that businesses with fewer than 500 employees offer 2 weeks paid sick leave to workers
        • Increased funding for food assistance programs
        • Guarantees free testing 
      • Negotiations Currently ongoing over a stimulus package legislation:
        • Administration's proposed $1 Trillion rescue plan includes sending two checks to many Americans
        • devoting $300 billion towards helping small businesses avoid mass layoffs
        • Approx. $50 billion to help rescue the airline industry and $150 billion to help prop up other sectors. 
        • The first vote on this package took place on Sunday, March 22nd, but failed to pass an initial procedural hurdle ad discussions continue on the package. The next senate vote on the bill is scheduled to take place on Monday, March 23rd.

Recent Happenings

  • Covid-19 CoB resources + updates
    • A web page of resources and recommendations on COVID-19 has been posted by Brethren Disaster Ministries. The web page includes sections of guidance for families and individuals, guidance for church leaders and congregations. 
    • OPP is currently working with Global Mission and Service on response and assessing how we can engage as Covid-19 developments occur. This is because while this issue area intersects with a number of issue areas codified in Annual Conference statements which guide our work, such as caring for the poor, we do not work directly on matters of public health. 
    •  Nonetheless, stay tuned to our Office of Peacebuilding and Policy Facebook page as we will be posting important policy updates on that platform. 
  • Staff Gather in Elgin
    • The Office of Peacebuilding and Policy attended the all staff gather in Elgin, Il from Feb. 11-13.
  • Churches for Middle East Peace 
    • OPP Director Nathan Hosler was recently voted on to continue as Chair for the Churches for Middle East Peace board. 
  • Immigration:
    • Elizabethtown CoB Immigration Support Committee 
      • OPP Associate Susu Lassa traveled to Elizabethtown, PA to fellowship with the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren and learn more about the ways in which the Elizabethtown Immigration Support Committee engages on the pertinent issue of immigration in their community. 
    • CoB Denominational Immigration Call 
      • OPP was thrilled to host a CoB denominational call with robust conversation on the subject of Immigration. The purpose of the call was to share on the various ways CoB churches + organizations engage on this issue; folks from OPP, San Diego First CoB, the Oasis Center, Elizabethtown Immigration Support Coalition, On Earth Peace, and Discipleship Ministries were able to join the discussion.
