Welcome to the latest issue of the Champs news round up containing news, stories and informative updates from Champs Public Health Collaborative and the wider public health teams across Cheshire and Merseyside. 

Directors' news

At the Directors of Public Health Board meeting in May the Directors received an update on the new C&M Suicide Liaison Service, Amparo, which successfully launched on on April 1st.
It was agreed that Sarah McNulty and Heather Grimbaldeston will represent the DsPH on the Merseyside and Cheshire Quality Surveillance Groups for Merseyside and Cheshire respectively and to feedback any key strategic issues.
An update was received on the recent presentation to the Merseyside CCG Network given by Liz Gaulton to highlight the C&M Public Health system priorities and there was full support as they chimed with local priorities and were seen as appropriate for system wide action. 
Heather Grimbaldeston delivered an update on the C&M Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) Oversight Group with expressed support for the C&M Public Health system priorities and further dialogue planned to agree SCN input.
Support was given for a proposed North West DsPH statement on FASD (Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) developed by Drinkwise
It was agreed that a letter of thanks to the Liverpool Public Health Observatory would be issued.


Duncan Selbie, Chief Executive at PHE joins Champs Directors' meeting

Duncan Selbie, Chief Executive at Public Health England (PHE) visited the Public Health team at St Helens and attended the Champs Public Health Collaborative Directors of Public Health (DsPH) meeting.

Duncan Selbie, Chief Executive at Public Health England (PHE) visited the Public Health team at St Helens and attended the Champs Public Health Collaborative Directors of Public Health (DsPH) meeting saying Cheshire & Merseyside were the “most organised” Collaborative with a “strong track record”.

Champs DPH secures place on National Blood Pressure System Leadership Board

The National Blood Pressure System Leadership Board have supported the Champs DsPH request for a Cheshire & Merseyside place on the Board saying they are ‘immensely impressed by the leadership demonstrated by Cheshire and Merseyside Public Health colleagues towards the blood pressure challenge and entirely agree that this proposal is mutually beneficial’.

Local ‘Collaborative Link’ roles established.

Following recommendations from the recent focus groups with local teams, ‘Collaborative Link’ roles have been established within each local authority to facilitate effective two way communication between local teams and the wider collaborative.

CWRIC conference delegates learn more about Champs Intelligence Network

Fiona Johnstone, Director of Public Health at Wirral Council presented an overview of Champs Public Health Collaborative and an overview of Cheshire and Merseyside Intelligence Network at the recent Cheshire and Warrington Research and Intelligence Collaborative (CWRIC) Conference that took place at the end of April.

LPHO achievements celebrated

A report has been produced by Liverpool Public Health Observatory (LPHO) which provides an overview of the work undertaken by LPHO over the last 20 years and its impact on policy and services.

Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health at Knowsley and lead DPH for Champs Intelligence Network said: “This report celebrates perfectly the achievements of LHPO and is being received well across the many networks that have used it to date.”

Top four attributes of school readiness agreed at 0-5 May CPD event

Margaret Carney, Chief Executive of Sefton Council and Chair of the 0-5 Strategic Leadership Transformation Group, welcomed over 80 delegates at the 0-5 School Readiness CPD event in May. The event saw multi-disciplinary colleagues from across Cheshire & Merseyside come together to agree the top four attributes of school readiness which will now be used as a basis for a common definition.

Domestic Abuse - It's everyone's business - Senior Leaders Event, 18 June, Liverpool

A North West event delivered by Champs for senior organisational leaders to connect and debate how to work better together across sectors on domestic abuse will take place on 18 June. Taking a strategic approach to tackling domestic abuse across sectors offers huge opportunities to improve the health and prospects for communities, families and children, as well as reducing the impact on the public purse.

Mental health champion's event, 6 July - change of date

Please note the mental health champion’s event planned for 6th July has been changed to take place on 10th September 2015 which is also World Suicide Prevention Day. The programme will include the launch of the Cheshire & Merseyside Zero Suicide Strategy, an update on the new suicide liaison service and the forthcoming work on improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. Keep your eye on the Champs events page for further updates. 


Public health system talent management programme completed

Three Champs Public Health Collaborative team members have completed the six month long North West Public Health England (PHE) Public Health System Talent Management Programme (PHSTM).

Cancer Research UK launch new Bowel Cancer Screening advertising campaign

Cancer Research UK will be delivering an advertising campaign that aims to raise awareness of the NHS bowel cancer screening programme (benefits/eligibility) in selected areas of England, including Merseyside from July 2015 to March 2016.

Pedalling hard for CALM

Helen Cartwright, Head of Commissioning and Mobilisation at Champs Public Health Collaborative, and her husband will be putting their feet to the pedal in an ambitious bid to cycle over 700km across the Alps in support of suicide prevention.

Take 7 steps out approach second hand smoke training, 23 June

Tobacco Free Futures have places available for a one day course to increase participant’s skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver second hand smoke brief advice to help protect children from the harms of tobacco smoke in confined spaces.

The first International Early Years Joint Conference hosted by University of Chester and International Early Years, sponsored by Community Playthings, will take place in July at the Warrington Campus of the University of Chester.
