Reforestation, carbon sequestration and agriculture: can carbon financing promote sustainable smallholder activities in Nicaragua? This new report examines a CommuniTree project that links forest activities in smallholder agriculture to carbon sequestration in Nicaragua.

Download the Tuggoz Declaration on Climate Change and Mountain Indigenous Peoples, from the International Network of Biocultural Heritage Territories. The network is made up of over 50 indigenous peoples and traditional farmers representing 21 communities in ten countries, together with civil society and research organisations. The group met in Tajikistan this September to analyse the impacts of recent climatic changes on our food and farming systems, and to develop responses.

In the District of Palma, Cabo Delgado Province, where a natural gas project is increasing pressures on community lands, Centro Terra Viva (CTV) and community paralegals are providing legal assistance to rural communities. This paper discusses the lessons learned from the use of paralegals as a tool for community-based advocacy, the challenges encountered as well as the constraints and opportunities for scalability and sustainability. This paper has been produced under IIED’s Legal tools for citizen empowerment project.

Getting biodiversity concerns into the policies and plans of government ministries and private sector companies is a goal that can take many years to achieve. Huge amounts of energy and determination are needed to bring the right people together. Stories of change: mainstreaming biodiversity and development highlights where this has been done and where a change is starting to be seen.

IIED researchers will be at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris next month, running a series of side events and workshops both inside and out of the official venue. Members of our Communications team will also be on the ground to provide coverage of our events and showcase our latest work at the IIED exhibition booth.

You can also join us for the annual Development & Climate Days in Paris, organised by IIED and partners, during the middle weekend of the COP. If you would like to attend, registration is now open.
