If food security is the answer, is it time to change the question?

The growing number of people living in cities – and changes in rural-urban linkages – are re-shaping our relationship with food. Policymakers need to take note, says IIED researcher Paolo Cravero in his recent blog.

Spotlight on...Environment &Urbanization briefs

The April issue of our flagship journal, Environment and Urbanization is out soon.  The next issue will focus on sanitation in cities, so watch this space and we will let you know when it is published.

For each issue of the journal published in the last 15 years we also publish five-page summaries which available to download for free from the IIED website. These are written primarily for the staff of government and international agencies who do not have time to read the full journal.  You can also request a hard copy of the briefing if you would prefer.

The Southern Voices programme has published a set advocacy toolkits to help civil society actors plan and conduct their climate change advocacy activities better. They have been structured to help you plan and deliver effective advocacy to combat the causes and effects of climate change, to support and protect poor and vulnerable communities, and to ensure that their voices are heard by policy makers locally, nationally and globally.

You can now download our recently published country paper on natural resources governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which highlights both key provisions and major challenges of natural resource legislation in the DRC. It suggests potential ways in which local communities, particularly marginalised populations, can play a prominent role in shaping inclusive, sustainable and equitable development.

The case studies highlight the fact that while community engagement is not a panacea – and indeed there are examples where it has proved to be a real challenge – it can, under the right circumstances, be highly effective.
