Camilla Toulmin to step down in 2015

IIED at COP20

IIED will be at this year's UN Climate Change Conference (COP20) in Lima, Peru from 1-12 December 2014. This year our main activities will include supporting the Least Developed Countries to achieve equitable outcomes at the negotiations and supporting the climate diplomacy of vulnerable countries.

We'll also be helping to organise and host the 12th Development and Climate Days conference – a two-day event focusing on innovative approaches and incisive dialogue for climate-smart development. In addition to this we will be joining a Global Landscape Forum session to discuss the strong linkages between the post-2015 and climate change agenda, as well as running various side events and showcasing our latest publications on the IIED exhibition stand.

New publications

The latest issue of Environment and Urbanization, one of the world`s most highly ranked environmental and urban studies journals is now available. Conflict and violence in 21st century cities includes new research that says violence in cities across Africa, Asia and Latin America is here to stay and can no longer be seen as a problem that can be challenged and overcome through development programmes.

A new working paper, Social Assessment of Protected Areas: Early experience and results of a participatory, rapid approach describes both the development of the SAPA methodology, and some preliminary results that illustrate the type of information generated and the strengths and weaknesses of the methodology.

Human Rights Standards for Conservation: An analysis of responsiblities, rights and redress for just conservation, presents a synthesis of the relevance of human rights standards to different conservation actors. It also includes an assessment of current standards and trends in international law, and an analysis of the various redress mechanisms available when rights are violated.

Events

Hundreds of policy-makers, researchers and academics gathered in London on 20 November to hear climate expert Fatima Denton give IIED's 2014 Barbara Ward Lecture and call for the narrative on Africa and climate change to be rewritten.
