The commitment to 'leave no one behind' is one of the most memorable pledges from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Taking a specifically urban approach can help to put a different perspective on identifying who is at risk of being left behind and the actions required to avoid this.

Spotlight on...Mountain peoples call for support to protect traditional knowledge

Representatives of mountain communities in five countries have called for support to help them maintain traditional ways of protecting their landscapes and natural resources in the face of climate change. More than 50 indigenous mountain peoples representing mountain communities in China, Nepal, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Peru gathered in the Stone Village, in Yunnan, Southwest China to discuss the impact of climate change on their communities.

At the end of their meeting, they issued the Stone Village Declaration, calling for urgent support for their traditional ways of managing natural resources, and setting out eight actions for the international community.

New publications this month

Post 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals have come to define the development agenda. But what does ‘leave no one behind’ (LNB) mean in practice? How will those furthest behind be reached first? And what will it take for LNB to be embedded in institutions and processes at every level, from local to global? Our new background paper, Leaving no one behind by 2030 highlights key statistics, why it is important and what IIED is doing.

Achieving energy access for everyone requires more and better targeted investment, but what role does climate finance play in filling the funding gaps? Unlocking climate finance for decentralised energy access examines data on the major climate funds to assess what share of international public finance goes toward energy access and compares this to overall finance needs for the sector.

Although the legal framework for gender equality exists in Vietnam, gender mainstreaming in climate change planning and action have not yet been fully realised and addressed by local actors. This new working paper examines the gender issue through the climate resilience lens in Da Nang to see how gender and its link to climate change was locally perceived and at what level(s) gender equality and women’s role were appreciated and incorporated into climate change planning and action.

Land investments, accountability and the law: Lessons from West Africa draws on comparative socio-legal research in Cameroon, Ghana and Senegal. The report explores how the law enables, or constrains, accountability in investment processes. It also develops a conceptual framework for understanding accountability; assesses how national law in the three countries influences opportunities for accountability; and provides pointers for research and action.
