Revealing the hidden refugees in African cities
A growing number of refugees and displaced people are living in cities in East Africa and the Horn of Africa – but governments are slow to recognise and meet their needs. The extent of the refugee crisis in the Middle East keeps Western media attention focused on arrivals in Europe and other well-resourced countries, making it easy to forget the large number of people moving within and between nations elsewhere.

Spotlight on... Evaluation and the SDGs
The first in a series of briefing papers from EVALSDGs and IIED highlights that evaluation will be crucial to the success of the Sustainable Development Goals, and that this means more than just measuring progress on individual indicators. At present, there is considerable focus on how to measure progress using indicators, but evaluation must go beyond measurement, to consider whether progress is equitable, relevant and sustainable. Such evidence will help demonstrate public sector accountability and accelerate change by focusing attention on enhancing learning and innovation.

New publications this month
In 2015, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were replaced by the Sustainable Development Goals. And the UN Conference Habitat III, to be held in October 2016 is meant to agree on 'the new urban agenda' through which these goals are to be met. The latest edition of the journal Environment and Urbanization, 'From the MDGs to the SDGs and Habitat III', looks critically at whether the much-needed changes in urban policy and practice will be achieved
Balancing carrots and sticks: incentives for sustainable hilsa fishery management in Bangladesh, is a new synthesis report and the outcome of a Darwin Initiative-funded project which has sought to improve the effectiveness of a incentive-based hilsa management scheme in Bangladesh. The report assesses the current ecological and socio-economic dynamics of hilsa fishery management in Bangladesh.

EVENT: Reimaging development in the LDCs
The challenges and opportunities that the Sustainable Development Goals create for the least developed countries will be discussed at an event in London next month.

The Least Developed Countries Independent Expert Group, IIED and the ESRC's STEPS Centre will host a dialogue on Monday, 13 June to discuss the challenges and opportunities that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) create for LDCs and seek ways forward above and beyond the current implementation debate.
